May 22, 2012

Athens, Ga. - For the first time in her 16 years in Westwood, UCLA women's tennis coach Stella Sampras Webster was named the Wilson/ITA National Coach of the Year on Tuesday. Also honored by the ITA were associate head coach Rance Brown, who was named ITA National Assistant Coach of the Year, and freshman Robin Anderson, who was named ITA National Co-Rookie of the Year.

Sampras Webster, who coached UCLA to its first NCAA Championship in 2008, led the Bruins to a second-place finish in the 2012 tournament, as the Bruins fell to Florida in Tuesday's NCAA Final. UCLA claimed its first ITA Women's Team Indoor Championship in program history this year, beating Duke, 4-0 in the title match. Her team has also been ranked No. 1 in the Campbell/ITA Division I Team Rankings for a school-record eight straight weeks. Another highlight for the Bruins in 2012 came during Pac-12 play when the Bruins ended Stanford's 157-match regular-season home winning streak.

Brown has played an integral role in helping the UCLA program to one of its best seasons in its storied history. The Bruins have put together a tremendous season with four freshmen in the singles lineup. Brown has done an incredible job of coaching these new players to get the most of out their abilities while helping them adapt to the college game. He coaches courts four, five, and six during dual matches, helping two of the freshmen reach the 20-win plateau in dual singles competition. He also dedicates time to teach the fundamentals of tennis to children in the community.

In just her first season of college tennis, Anderson, from Matawan, N.J., led UCLA in singles victories this season, posting a 34-8 overall record. She was 21-2 in dual matches, playing at the No. 1 position in all but two contests. Anderson was also 21-7 against ranked singles opponents. In addition to her singles efforts, she teams with Skylar Morton at No. 1 doubles, going 23-9 overall and 15-7 in dual matches. Anderson is currently ranked No. 4 nationally in singles and No. 6 in doubles (w/Morton). She is seeded No. 4 in this week's NCAA Singles Championships.
