Mustafa Abdul-Hamid tore a ligament in his right wrist in practice and has missed the Bruins' last six games. He had surgery on Dec. 23 to repair the damage and is out the rest of the season. Malcolm Lee had a MRI on his left knee on Dec. 27, which was inconclusive, and missed the Bruins' last game against Louisiana Tech (Dec. 28). He is doubtful for both games this week.

This is the 117th meeting between UCLA and the Oregon State Beavers with the Bruins leading the series 83-33. UCLA is 35-24 all-time in Corvallis, Ore. The Bruins have won the last seven games by an average of 25.6 points per game (542-363).

UCLA moved up one spot in both polls this week to No. 9 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll and No. 12 in the Associated Press poll, released on Dec. 29, 2008. UCLA has been ranked in the top 25 in the Associated Press poll for 64 straight weeks (since the 2005-06 preseason rankings).

UCLA Head Coach Ben Howland earned his 300th victory of his career (14th season) with the 72-54 win over DePaul in the 15th Annual John R. Wooden Classic (Dec. 13, 2008). He is currently 304-146 (.676), which ranks 25th on the winningest active coaches list by percentage and 68th on the active list by victories. Howland's first career victory was his first game at Northern Arizona in 1994, a 71-69 victory over New Mexico Highlands. His 100th career victory came in his second season at Pittsburgh with the 77-65 win at home over Seton Hall (Jan. 13, 2001). His 200th win came in his third season at UCLA with the 56-37 home win over Delaware State (Nov. 19, 2005).

UCLA is 20-10 (.667) in Pacific-10 Conference openers (since 1978-79). UCLA is 26-4 (.867) all-time in Pac-10 home openers and 16-14 (.533) in Pac-10 road openers. This is the fourth time the Bruins have opened Pac-10 play with Oregon State and the third time they have done so in Corvallis, Ore. The Bruins are 1-2 in openers against OSU and 0-2 in openers at OSU. Most recently, the Bruins opened the 2004-05 Pac-10 season with an 85-80 loss at OSU on Dec. 31, 2004. Head Coach Ben Howland is 9-3 all-time against Oregon State.
