Santa Barbara, Calif. - The No. 12 UCLA Baseball team picked up their first midweek win of the season, earning an 12-3 victory over the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos on Tuesday afternoon. Freshman right-hander Cody Poteet picked up the victory in his first collegiate start while a total of seven UCLA players recorded at least one hit in the win.
The Bruins got on the board first in the top of the third inning. After Ty Moore walked and Trent Chatterton singled, Eric Filia laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners over and bring up Brian Carroll. Carroll grounded out to shortstop, but it was enough to score Moore and give UCLA the 1-0 lead. The next batter was Kevin Kramer, who doubled down the left field line to score Chatterton and increase the lead to 2-0.
UCLA tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth, starting when Moore singled up the middle. Chatterton walked in the next at bat, and after another Filia sacrifice bunt, Carroll came to the plate and laced a two-run single to left to score Moore and Chatterton, giving the Bruins a 4-0 lead.
Poteet cruised through the early going, allowing just two baserunners (one hit and one walk) through the first four innings. Then in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Gauchos got their first run off of Poteet after Luke Swenson hit a RBI single to center to cut the lead to 4-1. UC Santa Barbara added another run two batters later, when Chatterton committed an error to score Swenson, making the score 4-2. But Poteet would get the next batter to ground out to shortstop to end the threat and keep the lead at two.
The Bruins would strike back though in the top of the sixth, going off for seven runs in the inning. After loading the bases with one out, Moore came through again for UCLA, hitting a double down the right field line to score Shane Zeile and Pat Gallagher. Chatterton followed that up with a line drive single through the left side to score Cody Regis to make it 7-2. In the next at bat, Filia doubled to left center to bring in Chatterton and Moore to give the Bruins a seven run advantage. After Carroll walked and Kramer was hit by a pitch to load the bases again, Pat Valaika hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Filia. On the same play, UCSB center fielder Cameron Newell threw the ball past the catcher, bringing in Carroll to make the score 11-2 Bruins.
The Gauchos would get one run in the bottom of the eighth while the Bruins added one in the ninth as UCLA went home with the 12-3 victory.
Overall, Chatterton and Moore led the UCLA offense, combining to go 5-7 with three runs apiece and a combined three RBI. Gallagher also posted a multi-hit game, going 2-4 with a run. Additionally, Carroll knocked in three runs on the day while Filia posted two RBI.
The Bruins will return home this weekend to play a three-game series vs. Wright State from Friday, March 1 to Sunday March 3. Game times are 6 p.m. on Friday, 2 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
