No. 21 UCLA Baseball Loses Series Finale at No. 10 Arizona State, 11-10

TEMPE, Ariz. - Shortstop Brandon Crawford posted a 3-for-5 effort with five RBI as No. 21 UCLA dropped the series finale at No. 10 Arizona State, 11-10, Sunday afternoon at Packard Stadium. Crawford and third baseman Jermaine Curtis each belted two-run home runs for the visiting Bruins, who fell two games behind the Sun Devils in the Pac-10 standings, after getting swept in the three-game series.

Curtis finished the afternoon 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs. First baseman Cody Decker hit 2-for-4 with one RBI. Arizona State left fielder Matt Spencer continued his strong weekend, hitting 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI. Sun Devil catcher Petey Paramore and second baseman Eric Sogard each totaled two hits.

Freshman right-hander Charles Brewer (0-1) absorbed the loss, allowing two runs and two hits in 2.1 innings of relief. Sun Devil right-hander C.J. Retherford (2-1) earned his second win, allowing one unearned run and two hits in two innings of relief. Jason Jarvis collected his seventh save of the season.

UCLA (28-22, 12-6 Pac-10) led 7-0 after four innings before Arizona State (37-12, 14-4) chipped away at the Bruins lead. The Sun Devils added three runs in the fifth before UCLA claimed a 9-3 lead after scoring twice in the sixth. Arizona State tied the contest, 9-9, with a six-run sixth inning. The Bruins scored once in the seventh to lead, 10-9, before the Sun Devils scored twice in the bottom of the inning to lead, 11-10.

The Bruins used two-run home runs by Crawford in the first inning and Curtis in the second inning to build a 5-0 lead. UCLA led 7-0 after scoring twice in the third inning.

The Sun Devils cut UCLA's lead to 7-3 in the fifth inning when Paramore connected for a two-run home run to left. First baseman Brett Wallace drove home center fielder Tim Smith with a single to center.

UCLA's two runs in the sixth inning came off base-hit by Crawford, who finished the afternoon tying his career high with five RBI.

Arizona State closed the gap with a six-run sixth inning, highlighted by a two-out, three run homer to right field by Sogard to tie the contest, 9-9. In the next half inning, UCLA regained the lead with a run-scoring single by Curtis.

The Sun Devils captured their first lead of the afternoon, 11-10, with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Arizona State right fielder Ike Davis and Spencer led off the frame with doubles, and Spencer later scored from third on a sacrifice fly by Tim Smith.

UCLA returns to action at Washington State on Friday, May 18 at 3:30 p.m. Friday's series opener will be televised live on FSN Northwest. The Bruins will play three games in Pullman, Wash., from May 18-20 before concluding their regular-season schedule at home May 25-27 against defending national champion Oregon State.

Game Notes: Brandon Crawford extended his hit streak to 10 games when he homered in the first inning; Crawford has now recorded two 10-game hit streaks in 2007...after having played 71 games without a collegiate home run, sophomore Jermaine Curtis has now hit three home runs in UCLA's last 11 games...the Bruins were swept by Arizona State, despite being outscored just 32-28...each team finished the contest with 11 hits...the series loss at Arizona State marks UCLA's first Pac-10 series loss this season.
