UCLA Advances in NCAA Tournament after 1-0 Win over Wisconsin

Box Score

Los Angeles, Calif. - UCLA advanced to the second round of the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship after a 1-0 first round victory over Wisconsin on Saturday evening. Freshman Taylor Smith scored the game's only goal in the 15th minute.

The third-seeded Bruins thoroughly dominated possession in the game, rarely allowing the Badgers in their half of the field and holding Wisconsin to just two shots in the game, both in the second half. UCLA, by contrast, had 18 shots and forced Badger goalkeeper into making four saves. Particularly dangerous was Zakiya Bywaters, who peppered the Badgers with six shots, and Samantha Mewis, who had four shots, including two on goal.

But it was Smith who put the Bruins on the board at 14:45, heading in a Caprice Dydasco cross far post for her eighth goal of the season.

Wisconsin went without a shot in the first half but had a few more chances in the second, including a wild opportunity in the box in the 83rd minute that the Badgers were unable to capitalize on. With the two teams scrambling for possession, Wisconsin's Lindsey Johnson managed a shot in the box, but Bruin defender Lucretia Lee made a block to keep the ball out of danger. UCLA maintained possession most of the way after that and had a shot by Mewis saved in the 85th and a shot by Bywaters blocked in the 86th.

"I know we didn't give up a lot of chances down there, but the more that it's 1-0 and you let a great team like that hang in there, the more there's a chance for things to happen," said UCLA head coach B.J. Snow. "We had a chance to put the game away twice (in the second half) and didn't do that, but at this point it's about surviving and moving on, and I'm really happy that we're one of the 32 teams that will be practicing this week."

The Bruins improve their record to 16-2-2, while Wisconsin ends its season with a 12-8-1 record. UCLA moves on to the second round to face Kentucky (14-6-1), who defeated UT-Martin, 1-0. The game will take place at San Diego State on Friday, Nov. 16 at a time to be determined.
