UCLA Notes Arizona State's victory over UCLA was its first in the Rose Bowl since Oct. 12, 1996 (42-34). UCLA still leads the overall series, 15-8-1.
The loss was UCLA's first at home against a ranked team since dropping a 29-24 decision to No.1 USC on Dec. 4, 2004. The Bruins had defeated four-straight ranked teams at home prior to today (#9/10 California in 2007, #2 USC in 2006, #10 Cal in 2005, and #21 Oklahoma in 2005).
Matthew Slater set new UCLA single-season and career records with his third kickoff return for a touchdown (89-yard return in the third quarter that cut ASU's lead to 24-20). Slater has three TD returns in his career, all this season. Slater also ties the Pac-10 single-season record for kickoff returns for touchdowns, matching Anthony Davis of USC (3 in 1974).
Slater also set a new UCLA single-season record for kickoff returns with 30, breaking Tab Perry's record of 29 set in 2000.
With 148 kickoff return yards today, Slater moved into fifth place on UCLA's career return yardage list with 928.
Redshirt freshman kicker Kai Forbath had two field goals in the game to bring his season total to 19, two away from Bjorn Merten's freshman record of 21, set in 1993. Forbath's 19 field goals rank seventh on UCLA's single-season list.
Terrence Austin's 68-yard punt return in the first quarter was a season-long and moved him into a tie for ninth on UCLA's single-season punt returns list with 24.
Redshirt sophomore Craig Sheppard's 1-yard touchdown run was the first touchdown of his career. His 56 yards rushing are a career-high.
Senior strong safety Chris Horton's three sacks today were the first of his career.
Quarterback Osaar Rasshan's 53-yard completion to Brandon Breazell in the third quarter was the longest of his career.
Breazell's five catches today moved him up to 18th on UCLA's career receptions list with 88.
UCLA has had six consecutive home games in the Rose Bowl with over 70,000 fans in attendance (78,690 today; 83,494 vs. Cal on Oct. 20, 2007; 78,543 vs. Notre Dame on Oct. 6, 2007; 72,124 vs. Washington on Sept. 22, 2007; 72,986 vs. BYU on Sept. 8, 2007; and 90,622 vs. USC on Dec. 2, 2006). ASU Notes It was the sixth time this season that the opponent had opened the scoring.
Thomas Weber's 53-yard field goal at the end of the first half is a career long.
