Spicer Named All-Pacific Region, Six Bruins Earn All-Pac-10 Academic Honors

Dec. 5, 2007

LOS ANGELES - Junior Nellie Spicer received her second straight All-Pacific Region first-team honor on Wednesday, while six Bruins were also named to the All-Pac-10 Academic team. Senior Meghan Schoen and juniors Jade Machado and Kaitlin Sather earned first-team accolades, while senior Rachell Johnson and juniors Elise Carstensen and Jessica Fine picked up honorable mention awards.

Spicer's All-Region selection is the 37th first-team honor for UCLA since 1987. The decorated setter, who is now eligible for All-American status, earned All-Pac-10 first-team honors for the third straight year last week to become the 10th player in UCLA history to record three all-conference awards. She can join an elite club next season, as just two Bruins, Natalie Williams and Elaine Youngs, are four-time, all-conference first-teamers.

Machado's first-team All-Academic award is the second straight for her, while it is the first honor for Schoen. Sather was named to the honorable mention team last season. The trio were also named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Team last month, with Machado receiving first-team honors and Sather and Schoen earning third-team accolades.

The Pac-10 awards for Carstensen, Fine and Johnson are their first respective honors.

To be eligible for the All-Pac-10 Academic team, a student-athlete must have been at their institution for one academic year, have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average and be either a starter or significant contributor.

The Bruins have accrued 55 All-Pac-10 Academic selections and 18 first-team awards.

The eighth-seeded Bruins face Oregon in the NCAA Regional semifinals on Friday at 7 p.m. at Stanford's Maples Pavilion. The match can be viewed live on ESPNU and will be broadcast on UCLABruins.com with Darren Preston at the call.
