Recap |  Final Stats |  Notes

UCLA Head Coach Karl Dorrell
(opening remarks): "Our team played hard. That was unfortunately a tough loss. I am proud of how they played. Osaar did a nice job with his first start, fighting through some circumstances and some rough moments. He had a lot of determination. Craig Sheppard did the same thing. He did a nice job carrying the load with the football. But we were on the short end of a few plays. We played well defensively most of the time. The personal foul call at the end of the first half and the big run in the third quarter were a couple of plays we'd like to have back. But we had some good execution and some positive things happen. We wanted to win this football game. We got a turnover late that gave us a chance to get back in the game, but we unfortunately made a mistake. But we have two games left in the season and we are determined to keep playing hard. We have a chance to get our health back in the next couple of weeks and we will be ready in two weeks against Oregon."

(on whether Osaar Rasshan was limited at quarterback): "We are building Osaar's package and feeding him more and more. He did really nice stuff and he is growing with the offense. He brings a different dimension with his mobility and we are encouraged with what he was able to do. We have two weeks to get him ready for Oregon."

(on personal foul by Bruce Davis at the end of the first half): "We are always out there fighting for calls. That one I can see why it was called. (Bruce) was trying to put a pass rush on. Officials are trying to protect the quarterback. But that's going to happen at times with the officiating. I have no qualms with them. That is part of the game, dealing with certain calls you may not agree with."

(on punting rather than kicking a pair of long field goals in the second half): "We did consider kicking it. It was a little bit long. We had a great punt by Aaron Perez putting it inside the one the first time. The next time we tried, there was still a lot of time left. We wanted another opportunity to pin them back."

(on UCLA's special teams): "Our special teams have played well all season. I am encouraged on how much we are getting better every game. We knew we had a good chance for a big kickoff return based on the matchups and it was good to see (Matthew) Slater get his third kickoff touchdown of the season. Terrence (Austin) made another big play on the punt return. The whole unit has been playing well all season and continues to do so."

Arizona State Head Coach Dennis Erickson
"[UCLA] came out and played well. I knew coming in that they have great players and great tradition, but we hung in there and got the win. Obviously we played better in the second half. We made some plays. You don't win nine games without making plays. We always seem to find a way. I've been around a lot of teams in my days, and this team is just so resilient. UCLA played really well, and we were fortunate to win."

"They (UCLA) have had a lot of injuries. That kid (Osaar Rasshan) came in and made some plays, but it's a hard thing to do. I felt if we just made some plays, we would have a very good chance."

(On the roughing the passer penalty at the end of the first half) "You talk about a big play for us. We were facing a fourth down and had to punt the ball. We ended up getting a field goal, and that totally changed the momentum going into halftime." "Defensively, we stepped up and got some turnovers there at the end. We had some opportunities there in the third quarter to put the game away, and then they returned the kickoff. But our defense hung in there."

Arizona State Quarterback Rudy Carpenter
"It's fun to come back to where I'm from (Westlake) and play in the Rose Bowl. UCLA is a good team. They play well on defense and fight hard, so it's good to come in here and get a win."

Arizona State Wide Receiver Chris McGaha
"I guess we're a second half team. Guys came together and made some plays. It was interesting, but we came out on top, and that's all we can ask for."
