LAKEWOOD, Calif. - Sophomores Ally Carda and Stephany LaRosa drove in the Bruins' runs, while junior Jessica Hall struck out seven in a complete-game performance, as ninth-ranked UCLA knocked off South Alabama 2-1 on Saturday at the Long Beach State Invitational at Mayfair Park.
Hall (3-2) did not allow an earned run or a walk in her seven innings of work, limiting the Jaguars to five hits. The junior had a strikeout in every inning but the second, including a pair in the fifth. She had two 1-2-3 frames in the third and sixth. At the plate, the Bruins had six hits, with LaRosa posting a pair.
The Bruins (20-4) got on the board in the bottom of the first. Sophomore Gracie Goulder led off by bunting a ball in front of the circle, but the throw was dropped by South Alabama second baseman Julie Moss, allowing UCLA to get the early baserunner. Senior B.B. Bates followed with a single up the middle and another single to right from LaRosa scored Goulder to put UCLA on top 1-0.
The Jaguars (20-3) equaled the score in the top of the fifth. Blair Johnson had a two-out triple to right and scored when the relay throw from Goulder to third skipped into the UCLA dugout.
UCLA broke the tie in the sixth. LaRosa posted a triple of her own to right off the base of the outfield fence and scored on a single up the middle by Carda to make it 2-1.
South Alabama would get the leadoff runner on in the seventh on a double by Kaitlyn Griffith, but Hall induced a foul out, a sacrifice and a strikeout to end the game.
The Bruins play twice on Sunday with time changes for both games. UCLA will take on UNLV at 11:15 a.m. and Charleston Southern at 3:45 p.m. Gametracker will be available for both contests at UCLABruins.com, as well as live updates at twitter.com/uclasoftball.
