Final Stats

LOS ANGELES - Kaitlin Sather had 11 kills and five blocks while Nana Meriwether led all players with 12 kills and hit .588 as fifth-ranked UCLA wrapped up a weekend sweep with a 30-20, 30-17, 30-27 victory over Arizona on Saturday night at Pauley Pavilion.

UCLA improves to 24-2, 11-2 Pac-10. Arizona falls to 10-15, 1-12 Pac-10.

The Bruins came out hot to start the match, using a Katie Carter kill plus two kills by Sather for a quick 3-0 lead. The Bruin lead was still just three at 12-9 before a 5-0 run, including two more Sather kills, opened up a 17-9 edge. The UCLA lead hit double digits for the first time at 21-11 and the Bruins were up by as many as 11 points at 23-12 before ending game one at 30-20 on yet another kill by Sather.

Game two again was dominated by UCLA. Arizona held a brief lead early in game two, the first time all night the visiting Wildcats led on the scoreboard, but UCLA used a 5-0 run off Sather's serve to open up an 8-5 lead on a kill by Nellie Spicer. After a sideout, the Bruins would score the next seven points, including an ace by Becky Mehring as UCLA opened up a 15-6 lead. Another Spicer kill put the margin into double digits at 19-9. A kill by Sather gave UCLA its largest lead of the night at 28-14, and the Bruins would settle for a 13-point, 30-17 win in game two.

Arizona fought back in game three as the teams were tied midway through the game at 14-14. UCLA scored four-straight points to claim an 18-14 lead, but UA rallied to cut the margin to one point at 21-10. However, back-to-back kills by Spicer and Meriwether started a quick 4-0 mini-run as UCLA reclaimed control of the game at 25-20. Ali Daley ended the night with a kill as the Bruins picked up the sweep.

Meriwether led all players with her 12 kills, 15 points and .588 attack percentage. Sather posted one of her best performances of the season with 11 kills and five block assists for 13.5 points. Laura Kroneberger paced the Bruins defensively with nine digs while Spicer dished 38 assists and directed the Bruin offense to a .330 attack percentage. Arizona hit just .147 for the match. UA's Whitney Dosty topped the Wildcat charts with 11 kills.

UCLA now hits the road for a key Pac-10 weekend as the Bruins travel to face #13 California on Fri., Nov. 10, followed by a match at #2 Stanford on Sat., Nov. 11. UCLA will enter next weekend trailing Stanford by just one-half match for the Pac-10 Conference lead (Stanford 11-1; UCLA and Washington tied at 11-2).
