It is back to the road for UCLA this weekend as the Bruins look to extend their 17-match winning streak to open the 2006 season. This is the best start to a season for UCLA since going 21-0 to open the 1993 season. The 4-0 start to Pac-10 play is UCLA's best since 2000 when the Bruins opened 4-0 before falling to Oregon State at home. The Bruins have been very comfortable playing away from Pauley Pavilion this season as 15 of their 17 wins have been recorded outside of the state of California.

Katie Carter Named Pac-10 Player of the Week
Senior outside hitter Kaite Carter was named the Pac-10 Player of the Week, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced on Oct. 2. Carter led the Bruins to a pair of victories over then-No. 4 Washington and Washington State, keeping the Bruins perfect start intact with a 17-0 (4-0 Pac-10) record.

Against the Huskies on Thursday night, Carter tied her career-high with 23 kills, hitting an impressive .312 from the outside in the match. She followed with a team-high 16 kills along with four blocks against Washington State on Friday. Carter's averages for the week were well over her previous season averages, topping her per-game kill average by nearly a full kill and posting an attack percentage 49 points higher than her previous average. This is the first weekly honor for Carter and UCLA's 51st Pac-10 Player of the Week award all-time.

UCLA vs. Arizona Wildcats (9-6, 0-3 Pac-10)
After going 9-2 to open the season, the Wildcats have dropped four consecutive matches, including the conference opener against ASU and both matches in the Bay Area last weekend. UCLA leads the all-time series against the Wildcats by a 42-16 margin, but have lost the last three meetings including a season series sweep by UA last year. Arizona is coached by Dave Rubio, who is in his 15th season at Arizona. Stat Leaders: KILLS- Brooke Buringrud (3.71/game), ASSISTS- Stephanie Butkus (11.00/game), ACES- Brooke Buringrud (0.40/game), DIGS- Brittany Leonard (3.40/game), BLOCKS- Dominique Lamb (1.49/game).

UCLA vs. Arizona State Sun Devils (9-5, 1-2 Pac-10)
After a win over Arizona to open Pac-10 play, the Sun Devils dropped a pair of matches in the Bay Area last weekend to fall to 9-5 (1-2 Pac-10). UCLA holds a 54-6 advantage in the all-time series including wins in the last seven meetings dating back to a 2002 loss in Tempe. ASU is coached by Brad Saindon, who is in his third year with the Sun Devils. Stat Leaders: KILLS- Nicole Morton (3.48/game), ASSISTS- Marina Mercer (7.73/game), ACES- Staci Smith (0.32/game), DIGS- Sydney Donahue (6.94/game), BLOCKS- Tierra Burnley (0.94/game)

Banachowski Undefeated In 40th Season
A dramatic five-game upset win over then-undefeated Washington on Nov. 12, 2005, made UCLA head coach Andy Banachowski the first women's Division I volleyball coach to win 1,000 career matches. Banachowski, who holds a career record of 1,021-266 (.793), is in his 40th season on the Bruin bench. He trails only UCLA men's coach Al Scates and Juniata (Div. III) head women's coach Larry Bock (1,069 entering 2006) for wins by a collegiate volleyball coach.

Banachowski was an All-America setter for Scates during his collegiate career at UCLA. (Scates holds a career record of 1135-212.) The first women's volleyball coach to be inducted into the National Volleyball Hall of Fame in Holyoke, Mass., Banachowski has coached the Bruins to six national championships, including three NCAA titles (1984, `90, `91).
