The men's and women's track and field teams finish seventh and fifth, respectively, at the 2013 MPSF Championships in Seattle. The Bruin women were unable to hold onto their led after the first day of competition but both squads rounded out the indoor conference championships with strong performances.
Sophomore Brea Buchanan took third place (8.30) in the women's 60m hurdles final Saturday at the Dempsey Indoor Facility. Buchanan entered the finals heat as the top qualifier, but Arizona State's Christabel Netty and Katie Nelms of Stanford emerged victorious in the finals with great races to beat the Bruin sprinter.
In the women's 400m final, Bruins Turquoise Thompson and Ally Courtnall finished back-to-back. Thompson took sixth (53.78) and Courtnall placed seventh (54.56). The 400m event was also a bright spot for the Bruin men Saturday, as sophomore Pete Lauderdale followed up yesterday's winning performance in the distance medley with a fifth place finish (47.96).
On the men's side, Nicholas Scarvelis placed second in the shot put event (61-4/18.69m), giving the men's team eight of their 39 points of the weekend.
Marcus Nilsson was unable to defend his heptathlon title from the 2012 MPSF Championships, despite winning the shot put event and posting top four results in five of the seven events. The junior Swede finished second (5,670 pts.).
Oregon claimed the women's team championship (112 pts.) and Arizona State ran away with the men's title (125.5 pts.).
UCLA Track and Field resumes competition next weekend with a set of meets: the Iowa State Last Chance, the Notre Dame Last Chance, the Washington Final Qualifier as well as the USA Track & Field Championships.
