SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The 15th-ranked Bruins dropped their Pac-12 series this weekend, losing an 8-3 decision to Utah on Sunday at Utah Softball Stadium. Junior Jessica Hall homered, while sophomores Ally Carda, Gracie Goulder and Stephany LaRosa and freshmen Allexis Bennett and Brittany Moeai also had hits.
Freshman Paige McDuffee (5-2) started in the circle and allowed four runs, four hits and one walk in one inning. Hall tossed 4 1/3 innings of relief and gave up four runs (three earned), 10 hits and two walks. Carda struck out one, facing two batters in the sixth.
The Bruins (26-13, 3-9 Pac-12) scored in their first at-bat. Goulder led off with a bunt single in front of the plate, stole second, moved to third on a sacrifice by senior B.B. Bates and scored on a single to left by LaRosa to make it 1-0 UCLA.
The Utes (16-20-1, 3-9 Pac-12) got the run back in the bottom of the first, as Kate Dickman walked with two outs and Kelsi Hoopiiaina tripled to left-center to even the score. Utah added four more in the second. Marissa Mendenhall led off with a single up the middle and was pinch-run for by Trina Gomez, who moved to third on a double to left-center by Mariah Ramirez. Shelby Pacheco followed with a triple to right to bring in Gomez and Ramirez to make it 3-1 Utah. Katelyn Elliott then walked, and one out later, Jackie Sweet tripled to right-center to plate Pacheco and Elliott to make it 5-1.
The Bruins scratched a run across in the fourth, as Hall hit her fifth homer of the season to straightaway center to cut the deficit to 5-2.
The Utes added two more in the fifth. With one out, Gomez singled to left and Ramirez reached on a throwing error by Hall. Pacheco followed with a double to left-center to plate Gomez and Ramirez to make it 7-2 Utah.
In the sixth, the Bruins scored, as Carda led off with a double to left, moved to third on a grounder to short by Hall and scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Moeai to make it 7-3.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Utes got that run back. With one out, Sweet singled back to the circle, Dickman singled to right and Hoopiiaina walked to load the bases. Kristen Stewart followed with a single to left to bring in Sweet to make it 8-3.
The Bruins host California next week in a Thursday-Saturday series at Easton Stadium. Thursday's game starts at 8 p.m. and will be televised live on ESPN2.
