Six Bruins will head to Tucson, AZ this Friday and Saturday to kickoff the Pac-10 Championships with the heptathlon/decathlon competitions. Representing UCLA will be freshmen Tatum Souza, Kimmie Conner and Marcus Nilsson, sophomores David Thomas and Dominic Giovannoni and junior Trent Perez.
Souza heads into the meet ranked third in the conference with a top score of 4927 points, while Conner ranks fifth (4545 points). Giovannoni ranks fourth in the decathlon with a score of 7192 points. Perez is sixth with his score of 6992 points, while Thomas ranks 11th (6256 points). All five of these Bruins achieved their scores at the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner Kersee Invite back in early April. Nilsson joined the team for the spring quarter after having signed a national letter-of-intent in February and this will be his first decathlon as a Bruin.
This weekend's multi-event competitions will be the final opportunity for the Bruins to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor meet, held June 8-11 in Des Moines, IA at Drake University.
While those five compete in Tucson, the Bruins will send athletes to Eagle Rock for the Oxy Invitational in the final tune-up before the Pac-10 Championships, held in Tucson May 14-15. All event groups will be represented at Oxy.
In this week's USTFCCCA polls, the Bruin men climbed back into the top 25 at the No. 23 spot after taking down rival USC on May 1st. The women are not ranked.
The Bruins continue to have many athletes ranked in the top 25 nationally. Below is a list of athletes, their ranking and their marks.
