Box Score

TEMPE, Ariz. - Junior Kaitlin Sather had a match-high 18 kills and tied a career best with 18 digs for her 10th straight double-double, as the 10th-ranked Bruins beat Arizona State in four on Friday at Wells Fargo Arena. Game scores were 30-25, 30-25, 24-30, 30-19.

The Bruins reach the 20-win mark for the ninth straight year, improving to 20-9 overall and 9-8 in Pac-10 play. Arizona State falls to 15-15 and 7-10 in league action.

Senior Rachell Johnson (11 kills, 10 digs), juniors Ali Daley (11 kills, 13 digs) and Nellie Spicer (53 assists, 14 digs) and freshman Dicey McGraw (11 kills, 13 digs) also had double-doubles, marking the first time since Dec. 9, 2000 that five Bruins recorded double-doubles in a single match. Freshman Katie Mills added eight kills, while junior Jessica Fine had 21 digs.

Early on in game one, neither team led by more than two points until at 11-all, the Bruins scored three in a row to go up 14-11. Sather had two of the three points on kills. Arizona State scored the next two points, but UCLA ran off four straight to take an 18-13 advantage. Daley had two blocks, while Johnson had a kill during the run. Still leading by four at 20-16, the Bruins went on another 4-0 run on two kills by Johnson and one each by Mills and Sather to force the Sun Devils into a timeout.

Out of the break, Arizona State came out rejuvenated, scoring five unanswered to cut the deficit to three at 24-21. But the Bruins never allowed their lead to dip below three the rest of the way. The game ended with another block solo by Daley, her third of the game, to give the Bruins the 30-25 victory. UCLA hit .268 and were paced by five kills apiece by Johnson and Mills, while Sather added four.

Game two was just like the first, with neither team leading by more than two points until the score got into the 20's. Trailing 18-16, the Bruins scored four straight to put them up 20-18 and force Arizona State into a timeout. Daley and Sather, coupled with two ASU attack errors, accounted for the 4-0 run.

UCLA still never had more than a two-point lead, but at 21-20, the Bruins went on a 7-0 run to take a commanding 28-20 advantage. McGraw had two kills and Spicer had one, as the Bruins also benefitted from five ASU errors. The Sun Devils came back with four straight to make it 28-24 and cause the Bruins to call timeout, but Spicer and Daley netted the clinching kills for UCLA to give them another 30-25 win. McGraw had five kills during the second game, while Daley had four, as the Bruins hit .240.

The Bruins held an early 4-2 lead in game three, but the Sun Devils went on an 8-2 run to go up 10-6 and force UCLA into an early timeout. Still down by four, UCLA went on a 5-1 run to even the game at 12. UCLA re-took the lead at 14-13, however Arizona State scored four of the next five to go back up 17-15. The Sun Devils would not trail for the rest of the game. The Bruins tied it at 18, but Arizona State went on another run of 8-1 to take a big 26-19 advantage. UCLA cut things to four at 28-24, but could get no closer, eventually falling 30-24.

UCLA trailed just twice in game four, using a long run in the middle of the game to rout Arizona State 30-19. With ASU leading 2-1, the Bruins scored four unanswered to take a 5-2 advantage. Arizona State came back to take the lead again 8-7, however UCLA got it back at 10-9 and didn't relinquish it for the rest of the game.

At 14-12, the Bruins scored three straight to go up 17-12. After an ASU sideout made it 17-13, UCLA recorded six unanswered to take a double-digit advantage at 23-13. The Bruins' lead never dipped below eight for the rest of the game, as Mills clinched it with a block to end the match. Sather had five kills in the final game, as the Bruins had six blocks and held Arizona State to a -.034 hitting attack.

Margie Giordano led Arizona State with 17 kills and 15 digs, while Staci Smith and Kristin Trayser had 12 apiece.
