Balanced Attack Propels Bruins Over Nevada

Sept. 5, 2008

Box Score

RENO, Nev. - Five different Bruins had at least five kills, led by the eight of senior Ali Daley and freshman Amanda Gil, as #6 UCLA swept Nevada on Friday. Scores were 25-19, 25-22, 25-18.

The Bruins move to 4-1 with their third straight win, while the Wolf Pack fall to 1-3.

Daley added six digs, while Gil had eight blocks, as the Bruins had 12 roofs as a team. Senior Nellie Spicer recorded five kills, 31 assists and four blocks and sophomores Dicey McGraw and Juliane Piggott had seven and five kills, respectively. The Bruins hit .218 as a team.

The Bruins led from start to finish in the first set, scoring four of the first five points. Gil had a kill and a block early on, while Daley and Spicer also had kills. The Wolf Pack recorded two of the next three, but UCLA went on a 5-0 spurt to extend its lead to seven at 10-3. Daley started the run with a kill, Piggott had back-to-back spikes and after a Nevada attack error, Piggott and freshman Katie Camp combined for a block to put the Bruins up by seven.

UCLA's lead got up to as many as eight at 14-6, but Nevada closed the gap to make a game of it. The Wolf Pack went on an 8-2 run to make it a two-point game at 16-14. But the Bruins wouldn't led their lead slip below a pair, eventually winning 25-19. UCLA scored the set's last four points on a combo block by Gil and McGraw, a Gil kill, a Nevada error and a McGraw spike on set point.

Nevada had control of the second set until UCLA made a late charge to take a two-set lead. The Wolf Pack scored four of the first five to take an early lead, but the Bruins came back to even things at eight with a 7-4 run. Nevada got its advantage back up to five again on two occasions, but UCLA again came back, scoring six straight to take its first lead of the set at 16-15. Two Nevada errors got the run going, which were followed by back-to-back combo roofs by Gil and Spicer, an ace by sophomore Jazmin Machado and another Gil/Spicer block to put the Bruins ahead by one.

The Wolf Pack came back to go up 19-17, but another 3-0 run by the Bruins gave them the lead back. Daley had two of the three points on kills. It still appeared that Nevada would take the set, leading 22-21, but four in a row by the Bruins closed out a 25-22 victory. Piggott and McGraw had kills to start the run, while back-to-back Wolf Pack errors gave UCLA the 2-0 match lead.

It was another wire-to-wire victory in the third, as the Bruins completed the sweep. UCLA scored the first three, as well as four of the first five, and never looked back. Nevada was no closer than two points in the third, with the Bruins scoring seven of the final nine points of the set. Leading 18-16, successive kills by sophomore Katie Mills and Daley, followed by a Gil solo block and a McGraw ace made it 22-16. Freshman Lainey Gera closed out the proceedings with an ace to give the Bruins the 25-18 win.

Nevada was led by Allison Hernandez's 11 kills. The Wolf Pack hit just .086 as a team.

UCLA closes play in Reno on Saturday when it faces Seattle University at 3 p.m. Live stats will be available on nevadawolfpack.com.
