Women's Volleyball Team Wins USVA Adult Open Championships

May 31, 2007

The UCLA Women's Volleyball team concluded its spring training by winning the 2007 USAV Adult Open Championships over the Memorial Day Weekend. The tournament was played in the Austin (TX) Convention Center over four days.

Nellie Spicer was named MVP of the Open Division and teammates Ali Daley and Kaitlin Sather joined her on the All-Tournament first team, while Rachell Johnson and Meghan Schoen earned second-team honors.

Playing under its club name, Westwood, the team concluded the first two days of pool play undefeated with a 5-0 record, and gained a second seed in the double elimination bracket. En route to the finals, Westwood defeated Bameso and UDub, the University of Washington's spring training team in an exciting five-game match.

In the winner's bracket finals, Westwood defeated USA Red, a collegiate all-star training team sponsored by USA volleyball. After dropping the first game, Westwood responded by winning the next 3 to take the match.

Playing USA Red again in the finals, Westwood took its only loss of the tournament in four games, setting up a dramatic one-game double-final match for the championship. Westwood led at the side switch 13-12, and surged ahead to take the game, match and championship, 25-19.

"Because of travel arrangements, we finished with only seven players in the championship match, and they were magnificent," said head coach Andy Banachowski. "Our conditioning certainly paid off for us on the final day."

Jessica Fine and Jade Machado split time at the libero position and sparked a tremendous floor defense that was the talk of the tournament. Emily Clements, Elise Carstensen, Diana Douglas, Katie Mills and Nikki Jagd completed the championship roster that took home gold medals for the very first time.
