Dec. 10, 2006
Fourth-seeded UCLA and top seed Nebraska will play in the first Division I Women's Volleyball National Semifinal, it has been announced by the NCAA. The match will be televised live by both ESPN2 and ESPNU from a sold out Qwest Center in Omaha, Neb., and will be followed by the second semifinal between defending NCAA Champion Washington (29-4) and 2006 Pac-10 Champion Stanford (29-3) at 8:30 pm CT.
Thursday's winners will advance to Saturday's National Championship match at 8 pm CT Saturday, Dec. 16.
UCLA (33-3) advanced to the National Semifinals with a three-game sweep of Hawai'i on Saturday night in Honolulu. The Bruins are the only team remaining in the tournament who have not lost a game in postseason play, and were the only team to win their Regional Final in a three-game sweep.
Thursday's matchup between the Huskers (33-1) and Bruins is a rematch of last season's NCAA Regional Semifinal, a 3-0 Nebraska win last December at Qwest Center Omaha.
The Huskers earned their ticket to the National Semifinals, coming back from a 2-0 deficit to top No. 9 Minnesota in five games. Regional Most Outstanding Player Jordan Larson paced NU with a career-high 21 kills and 17 digs, as Nebraska overcame a 2-0 deficit in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. The Huskers will be making their second straight appearance in the national semifinals and 10th in school history.
