Regular Season Comes to a Close This Week in Arizona
The UCLA women's soccer team (10-7-1; 3-4 Pac-10) rounds out the 2010 regular season on the road this week, traveling to Arizona for a pair of Pac-10 matches against Arizona and Arizona State. The Bruins begin the weekend in Tucson, facing Arizona (5-11-2; 1-6 Pac-10) on Friday at 7:00 p.m. UCLA then travels to Tempe for a match with Arizona State (8-6-3; 2-4-1 Pac-10) on Sunday at Noon (PST). UCLA-ASU Match on TV
UCLA's match with Arizona State on Sunday can be seen live in Southern California on FSN Prime Ticket. It marks the second straight week that the Bruins will be playing on TV, as Fox Soccer Channel carried the team's match against Washington last Friday.
Bruins Split With Washington Schools
UCLA posted a 1-1 record at home last week, falling 1-0 to Washington on Friday before rebounding for a 2-0 victory over Washington State on Sunday. In the Washington State win, Lauren Barnes and Jenna Richmond each scored to halt the team's three-game scoreless streak.
Senior Day a Success
Last Sunday marked the final regular season home match for seven Bruin seniors, as Dana Wall, Kylie Wright, Lauren Barnes, Iman Bearde, Elise Britt, Taylor Cochran and Liz Zadro were all honored in a pre-game ceremony. Barnes made her Senior Day one to remember, as she tallied the game-winning goal in the team's 2-0 win over Washington State. This year's seniors have enjoyed tremendous success in their four years in Westwood, helping the team to three straight NCAA College Cups. In addition, their record going into this Friday's match with Arizona is an impressive 73-13-6.
UCLA Against the Arizona Schools
UCLA is 15-1 all-time against Arizona, with the Wildcats' lone win in the series coming in 2004 (1-0 in Tucson). The Bruins own a similar record against Arizona State, taking a 12-1 all-time series record into this Sunday's showdown. The Sun Devils' only win over UCLA was during the 2000 season (1-0 in Tempe).
Latest RPI Report Released
UCLA checks in at No. 23 in the latest RPI report of the 2010 season released on Tuesday. The Ratings Percentage Index is a mathematical measurement of a team's strength. The formula consists of a team's winning percentage against Division I opponents (25 percent), the opponents' average winning percentage (50 percent) and the opponents' opponents' average winning percentage (25 percent). Road victories are multiplied by 1.4 in the portion of the formula that deals with a team's winning percentage, while home victories are multiplied by 0.6. It is one of the main tools used in determining NCAA Tournament field.
NCAA Selection Show on Monday
UCLA will learn its postseason fate on Monday, as the 64-team NCAA Tournament field is scheduled to be released at 1:30 p.m. (PST). ESPNews will carry the announcement live.
Wall Heading Home
Senior midfielder Dana Wall gets to finish out her Pac-10 career in front of friends and family on Sunday, as the Bruins' match against ASU is just down the road from her hometown of Scottsdale, Ariz. Wall attended Chaparral High School and played club soccer for the Sereno Soccer Club. Her sister, April, was also an accomplished player, lettering at Stanford from 2004-07.
Head Coach Jillian Ellis
Jillian Ellis is in her 12th season as head coach at UCLA. The 2000 NSCAA/adidas National Coach of the Year, Ellis owns a record of 226-44-13 at UCLA. Her overall coaching record, which includes two seasons at the University of Illinois, stands at 245-62-13. She has led the Bruins to seven Pac-10 titles (2001, 2003-08) and eight appearances in the NCAA College Cup (2000, 2003-09).
