Dec. 10, 2008

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Three Bruins were honored on the AVCA All-Pacific Region Team on Wednesday, as senior Nellie Spicer was named All-Region First Team, senior Jessica Fine earned All-Region honorable mention accolades and Amanda Gil was named Pacific Region Freshman of the Year.

It marks the third straight year Spicer has earned first-team honors, becoming the sixth Bruin to accomplish the feat. Fine's award is her first All-Region honor, while Gil becomes the first UCLA player to earn Pacific Region Freshman of the Year accolades since the award began in 1999.

The All-Region selections give the Bruins 47 overall awards since 1987 and 38 first-team honors.

Spicer ranks fourth in the conference and 29th in the country in assists per set at 10.92. She leads the Bruins with 17 double-doubles, having reached double figures in assists and digs in five straight matches. Spicer, who was also named All-Pac-10 First Team, has five 50-plus assists contests and produced a season-best 61 against Washington on Oct. 10. The senior moved into second on UCLA's all-time assists list on Nov. 14 and is just 25 away from joining Erika Selsor as only the second Bruin to reach 6,000 assists. Spicer also ranks third on the team in digs per set (2.50).

Fine, an All-Pac-10 honorable mention selection, is the team leader in digs per set at 4.81 and also ranks third in the Pac-10 and 38th in the nation. The senior became the 17th Bruin to reach 1,000 career digs on Nov. 22 and has reached double figures in digs 26 times this season. She has three 30-plus dig efforts, including a season-best 32 against Pepperdine. Fine also has a pair of 30-dig performances against Washington (Oct. 10) and Oregon (Nov. 1), as well as 11 more matches with at least 20 digs.

Gil is first in the Pac-10 and fifth in the nation with 1.46 blocks per set. The Pac-10 Freshman of the Year has totaled at least five blocks in a team-best 18 matches. Gil has two double-figure blocks contests against Oregon (13 on Nov. 1) and California (10 on Nov. 21). She is also first on the team in hitting percentage (.331), second in points per set (3.46) and third in kills per set (2.58). Gil, who was also named honorable mention All-Pac-10, had 14 kills and only one hitting error in 25 attempts (.520) during her first two NCAA Tournament matches last weekend.

The 14th-seeded Bruins travel to Texas for the Austin Regional, taking on the host and third-seeded Longhorns on Friday at 4:30 p.m./6:30 p.m. CT. Links to Gametracker, live audio and live video can be found here.
