Top-Ranked Bruins Upset by Cal, 4-3

April 13, 2012

Berkeley, Calif. - The top-ranked UCLA women's tennis team suffered its first loss of the 2012 season on Friday afternoon, as No. 10 Cal registered a 4-3 upset over the Bruins at the Hellman Tennis Complex in Berkeley. With the loss, UCLA sees its record fall to 20-1 overall and 7-1 in the Pac-12. The Golden Bears, who remain undefeated in the conference at 8-0, improve to 16-4 overall.

With Friday's dual match tied at 3-3, the contest came down to court No. 5, where UCLA freshman Chanelle Van Nguyen was in a tight battle with Cal junior Annie Goransson. The pivotal point of the match came with Van Nguyen serving at 2-3 in the third set, as Goransson managed to break Van Nguyen and then hold for a 5-2 lead. After Van Nguyen held for 3-5, Goransson subsequently closed things in her very next service game, converting her fourth match point for a 4-6, 7-6, 6-3 victory to give her team the 4-3 upset.

UCLA got behind early in the match when Cal posted wins at all three doubles courts to take a 1-0 lead. After 17th-ranked Goransson and Anett Schutting upset ninth-ranked Courtney Dolehide and Pamela Montez, 8-3 at court No. 2, Cal clinched the point when Tayler Davis and Cecilia Estlander downed McCall Jones and Carling Seguso, 8-6 at court No. 3. The Bears also notched an 8-7(3) win at court No. 1, becoming the first team to sweep UCLA in doubles this season. In fact, it marked only the second time in 21 matches this year that UCLA has surrendered the doubles point.

Once singles began, Cal, which never trailed in Friday's match, took a 2-0 lead after 12th-ranked Zsofi Susanyi beat Jones, 6-0, 7-6(9) at court No. 2. UCLA, however, answered right back with a pair of three-set wins from Montez and Ray at court Nos. 3 and 6, respectively to tie things up at 2-2. After the Bears got another win at court No. 4 for a 3-2 lead, sixth-ranked Robin Anderson tied things up at 3-3 with a big win at court No. 1, downing defending NCAA Singles Champion Jana Juricova, 2-6, 6-1, 7-5. Juricova, who is ranked No. 8 nationally, is the fourth top 10 player to fall to Anderson this year.

Five of Friday's six singles matches were decided by third sets. UCLA beat Cal by the very same score on Feb. 24 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. At 20-0, UCLA was off to the program's best start since 1987.

UCLA returns to the courts tomorrow, facing No. 6 Stanford at Noon.
