This fall, UCLA student-athletes "adopted" a classroom and corresponded with local elementary and middle school students throughout the season. By writing letters back and forth, the Adopt A Classroom program allowed students to practice their reading and writing skills while hearing from a positive role model.

At the end of the program, students were invited to come to a game on UCLA's campus and cheer on their Bruin athlete. After the game, students had the opportunity to meet their Bruin athlete in person, get player autographs, and take pictures. The teams that participated this fall were men's soccer, women's soccer, and women's volleyball. Through communication with these teams, the Adopt A Classroom program stresses the importance of both education and athletics and aims to motivate students to work towards their goals in school and in life.

Seventy classrooms participated in the Adopt A Classroom program this fall. Both students and athletes alike enjoyed this unique experience. Students love the opportunity to experience the excitement of a college athletic event, and athletes greatly appreciate the exuberant fan support from the classrooms on game day. A young student wrote to one of our Bruin athletes, "My favorite subject is math just like you. I am in 5th grade. One of my favorite sports is soccer just like you." UCLA Athletics is proud to connect these students to a role model athlete, and hope they are encouraged by their athlete's dedication to both academics and athletics.

Overall the program was a huge success thanks to the participation of both local classrooms and UCLA Student-Athletes. UCLA looks forward to kicking off the winter and spring Adopt A Classroom programs with the women's basketball, softball, baseball and men's volleyball teams.
