The men's and women's track and field teams opened up the 2013 indoor season on Friday highlighted by solid performances at the UW Invitational in Seattle from Dustin Fay (2nd, 5000m) and Tatum Souza (4th, pentathlon). The multi-events including the women's pentathlon were completed while men finished four of seven events in the heptathlon. The bulk of the races and field events are underway on Saturday.
Senior Dominic Giovannoni and sophomore Marcus Nilsson earned3033 points and 2892 points, respectively, through Day 1 in the heptathlon. Giovannoni put on an impressive performance to lead the field by finishing in eighth in 60m (7.21), second in high jump (6.73m), in tied-sixth long jump (13.95m), second in shot put (1.94m). Just on his heels was Nilsson is in fifth place after coming in eleventh in 60m (7.36), fifth in high jump (6.48m), in eighth long jump (14.25m), first in shot put (1.88m).
In the pentathlon, Junior Tatum Souza finished in fourth place with 3888 points, including finishing in eighth 60 hurdles (8.83), eighth in high jump (1.66m), 12th in long jump (12.79m), second in shot put (5.26m) and seventh in 800m (2:22.37). Just three spots behind her in seventh place was junior Alexis Walker with 3629 points including coming in fifteenth in 60 hurdles (9.18), fifth in high jump (1.69m), in eighth long jump (7.98m), 28th in shot put (5.38m) and fifth in 800m (2:17.96).
The 200 meter was the first open track event of the evening, junior Breyonna Hunter ran a solid race in as she finished in 19th place in a time of 25.43 seconds. In the men's event, Pete Lauderdale was the top finisher for UCLA as he finished seventh (22.21). Laijon White (22.35) and Tyler Brown (22.84), Wally Rodriguez (23.09) were 13th, 25th and 28th, respectively, while and Jarrett Gonzales was 29th (23.21).
The Bruins are back in action on Saturday for Day 2 of the UW Invitational.
