SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Junior Ali Daley recorded a match-high 17 kills and served three aces, while junior Kaitlin Sather posted her third double-double of the season with 12 kills and 11 digs, as the fifth-ranked Bruins defeated Cal State Northridge in three, 30-16, 30-24, 30-18, on Friday at the USD Tournament in San Diego.

The Bruins improve to 8-1 on the season and win their seventh in a row, while the Matadors fall to 3-7. Senior Rachell Johnson added 11 kills with just one error on 17 swings for a .588 hitting percentage. Junior Nellie Spicer totaled 39 assists, while junior Jade Machado had a team-high 12 digs. UCLA had nine service aces and hit a season-best .325.

Northridge got off to a quick start in game one, while UCLA suffered a scary moment just three points in. After a pair of sideouts to start the game, the Matadors took a 2-1 lead on a Bruin attack error. On the play, sophomore Emily Clements fell to the ground with an apparent knee injury and laid on the court for a few minutes. She would be helped off the floor and would not return. The Bruins still a little shell-shocked from the loss of their teammate lost the next two points to trail 4-1, but turned it on after that to take control of the game.

UCLA won the next three points to even the game at four, and after a Northridge sideout, claimed nine in a row, including eight straight on freshman Juliane Piggott's serve to take a 13-5 lead. Also during the 9-0 run, Spicer had two kills and a block. After another sideout by the Matadors, UCLA reeled off another three in a row to take an early double-digit lead at 16-6. The Bruins' lead never dipped below nine the rest of the way, with the largest advantage being 14 when UCLA scored the game-winning point on a block by Piggott and sophomore Elise Carstensen to take game one 30-16.

The Matadors again got off to a good start at the outset of the second game, taking the first four points. But once again the Bruins battled back and quickly tied things up at five. Northridge maintained its lead for the first half of the game, but could never take any more than a two-point advantage.

Trailing 16-14, UCLA netted four in a row to take an 18-16 edge. The Bruins would not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the game. Leading 27-24, UCLA recorded the final three points of the game to win it 30-24. A Daley and Johnson block assist, a solo block by Johnson and a kill by freshman Dicey McGraw closed out the second set.

The Bruins never trailed in the third game to register their sixth, three-game sweep of the season. With a 7-6 lead, UCLA posted five of the next six points to take a 12-7 edge. Senior Meghan Schoen had two kills and a block during the run. The Matadors posted the next two points, but the Bruins went on a long run to take a double-digit lead.

Three straight kills by Daley made it 15-9, and after a Northridge sideout, UCLA recorded six in a row to complete a 9-1 run and go up 21-10. The Bruins' lead never dipped below 10 the rest of the way, reaching as high as 13 on two occasions. A kill by Piggott clinched the game 30-18 and the match. The Bruins hit .474 in the third game with just two errors in 38 attempts.

The Matadors were led by Angela Hupp's nine kills and 15 assists.

The Bruins play twice at the USD Tournament on Saturday, facing Pittsburgh at 12 p.m. and #18 San Diego at 7 p.m. at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. The match against Pittsburgh will feature Gametracker on usdtoreros.com, while the contest with USD will be broadcast on UCLABruins.com with Darren Preston at the call.
