Eugene, Ore. - The second-ranked UCLA women's soccer team completed the program's first-ever undefeated regular season on Sunday, posting a 2-0 victory over Oregon on a cold and wet day at Eugene's Pape Field. With the win, the Bruins capture the 2008 Pac-10 title outright, moving to 18-0-2 overall and 9-0 in the Pac-10.
The first goal of the match came in the 56th minute when UCLA sophomore Lauren Barnes bent in a corner kick that deflected off the Oregon goalkeeper and into the net. Despite the great ball by Barnes, the play was actually scored as an own goal by Oregon.
UCLA tacked on an additional score in the 80th minute when a long crossing pass from Lauren Barnes rattled around in the Oregon box before being put away on a point-blank shot to the far post by Kristina Larsen.
The Bruins finish the regular season with 16 shutouts in 20 matches. UCLA goalkeeper Ashley Thompson made three saves on the day. The Bruins outshot the Ducks, 18-7 on the afternoon.
UCLA, which clinched its sixth straight Pac-10 title with a 2-1 win over Oregon State on Friday, awaits its position in the 64-team NCAA Tournament draw announced on Monday at 5:00 p.m. (PST) on ESPNews.
