Tempe, Ariz. - The UCLA women's soccer team pushed its winning streak to three straight on Sunday, posting a 3-0 victory over Arizona State in the final match of the regular season for both teams at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium. With the win, UCLA closes out the regular season 12-7-1 overall and a 5-4 in Pac-10 play. The Sun Devils finish up 9-7-3 and 3-5-1 in conference action.
Junior Sydney Leroux was once again the difference maker for the Bruins, scoring in just the third minute of play. UCLA's scoring sequence began when Leroux was fouled near the sideline to give the Bruins a free kick on the Sun Devil side of the field. Defender Lauren Barnes took the kick, bending a high-arching ball into the box that was headed up in the air by an ASU defender. With the ball still in the box, Leroux jumped up and headed it in from about five yards out.
Leroux's second goal came off of a ball played into space by Zakiya Bywaters. Leroux ran onto it, eventually beating two Sun Devil defenders before scoring on a right-footed shot from about 10 yards out. For Leroux, who also had the game winner in the team's 1-0 victory over Arizona on Friday night, it marks her 11th and 12th goals of the season. She leads the Bruins in scoring this year with 25 points (12g, 1a).
Leroux also had a hand in the team's third goal, as she earned a free kick for the Bruins after being tripped up on a breakaway just outside the Sun Devil box. Barnes took the kick, curling in a left-footed shot to the upper-right corner to give UCLA a 3-0 advantage.
Bywaters nearly gave the Bruins a 4-0 lead in the 69th minute, however her right footed shot was just tipped by ASU goalkeeper Alyssa Gilmore, clanking off the right post.
UCLA now awaits the announcement of the 64-team draw for the 2010 NCAA Women's Soccer Championships. The tournament field will be announced tomorrow live on ESPNU at 1:30 p.m. (PST).
