Fifth-Ranked Bruins Make It Five Straight With Win at Cal State Fullerton

FULLERTON, Calif. - Sophomore Dicey McGraw had a match-high 12 kills, while freshman Amanda Gil added nine kills, six blocks and six digs, as the fifth-ranked Bruins won their fifth-straight match in a three-set sweep at Cal State Fullerton. Scores were 25-10, 25-20, 25-19.

The Bruins move to 6-1 on the season, while the Titans fall to 2-5.

McGraw hit .440 for the match, a season-best percentage. Senior Ali Daley added eight kills and six digs, senior Nellie Spicer posted 34 assists and nine digs and senior Jessica Fine recorded 14 digs.

The Bruins led from start to finish in the first set, scoring the first six points and never looking back. After a Fullerton service error to open the match, UCLA received a kill from Daley and a Daley/Gil block to go up 3-0. Two more Titan attack errors and a Spicer kill gave the Bruins a 6-0 advantage. Fullerton came back to score the next two, but an 8-3 run put the Bruins up by nine at 14-5. McGraw had three kills during the run and Gil added another, as the Bruins benefited from four Fullerton errors.

UCLA took its first double-digit lead of the set at 17-7, as it was in the midst of a 9-2 run. Gil had two kills and two block assists during the run, Piggott added two kills and a block assist and Daley had an ace and a kill. The Bruins won the opener on a block by McGraw to take the set 25-10. Gil recorded three kills and three blocks in the first set, while McGraw also had three kills. The Bruins hit great in the first, posting 11 kills and just three errors in 19 attempts for a .421 hitting percentage. UCLA held Fullerton to a -.069 attack.

The Bruins took an early advantage in the second, but the Titans came back before UCLA put them away at the end. The Titans scored two of the first three points, but the Bruins scored eight of the next nine to go ahead 9-3. Gil had two kills and a combo block during the run, while Daley added a kill an ace. UCLA still led 12-8, but the Titans went on their run, scoring five straight to take a 13-12 advantage.

Trailing 14-13, the Bruins scored three in a row to take the lead back, never falling behind for the rest of the set. A McGraw kill sandwiched by a pair of Daley spikes put UCLA on top 16-14. The Titans tied it again at 16 and 17, but could not get over the hump. Leading 20-19, the Bruins scored four straight to take command. Following a Titan service error, Piggott had back-to-back kills and Gil spiked one home. Gil won it on the Bruins' second set point on a kill to take it 25-20. Gil was outstanding in the second, posting five kills and no errors in 13 swings. Daley and McGraw each added four kills. UCLA hit .250 to Cal State Fullerton's .179.

The Bruins played steady in the third and recorded a 25-19 victory to post their fifth win in a row. Tied at eight, the Bruins scored three straight and five of the next seven to take a 13-10 advantage. UCLA took advantage of five Cal State Fullerton errors. The Titans posted the next two points, but a 4-1 UCLA spurt made it 17-13. The Bruins' lead never went below three for the rest of the set. Freshman Sara Sage recorded her first career kill on match point to clinch the victory. UCLA hit .344 in the third, with McGraw posting five kills. Cal State Fullerton swung at .100 in the third.

Erin Saddler led the Titans with 10 kills, as Cal State Fullerton hit .083 in the match.
