UCLA Head Coach Karl Dorrell

(opening remarks): "That was a very rewarding football game to see our players play as well as they played and to hang in there for a 60-minute fight. That was a very good Cal football team with a lot of weapons. We did a nice job offensively spreading the ball around. Pat [Cowan] played terrific, doing what he normally does in terms of igniting the offense. Our defense made some big plays. We eliminated most of Cal's big plays. Special teams played OK. They had a big return there late in the game, and our defense stepped up and made a big play. All three phases had to do their job very well. Our field goal team with Kai [Forbath] has been excellent the last couple of weeks. DeSean Jackson didn't get much room to make any plays. Our offense did a nice job taking care of some advantages when he had to. We weren't perfect, but it was a good enough game to show what our capabilities are. This was our best game in terms of playing a high-caliber game."

(injury update): "We had an unfortunate injury at the end of the game with Christian Taylor. We think he's going to be okay. He had a concussion and had some seizure-type [symptoms] on the sideline. He does have feeling in all of his extremities in his arms and legs and in his toes. It's always scary when you see a player go through something like that. We had to say our prayers for him, and hopefully he'll go through a speedy recovery."

(on Cal's wide receiving corps): "We studied them, and that was an advantage we had with the extra week. We tried to get to know their offense as good as we could. It was good to see him [Alterraun Verner] recognize in that critical down to see what they wanted to do. He made a great play. It looked like what he did a year ago in a couple games where he went the distance for a touchdown. It was fun to see someone make a big play and rally."

(on staying undefeated in the Pac-10): "I'm going to feel good today, but tomorrow it's going to be business as usual. It's tough to play up there in Pullman. When you have a victory like this, you enjoy it for a few hours, and then it's time to get on for the next one.

"I am who I am. I believe in our players. I know we make some mistakes at times. We will respond positively and will continue to fight. Am I surprised we played as well and won the game today? No, because that's the kind of guys we have in this program. I want to coach this team to be as good as they can be."

(on UCLA's secondary, feeling pressure from the receivers): "They are a dangerous group, as you know. They are as talented a group of receivers as there are in this conference. Our players really responded well. We knew that it would be tough to totally shut down an offense like that. We're going to keep lining up and fighting. Just like with Alterraun [Verner] up at the end of the game, and he timed it up perfectly and made a great play."

(on not going for it on 4th-and-1): "I didn't want to make a mistake. It was longer than just fourth and one - it was about fourth and one and a half. I just didn't want to put ourselves in a bad situation there. You can get a chance to put them in their end of the field and make them drive to score some point. We were down by one at the time. We didn't nail the punt like we wanted to, but our defense came through and protected ourselves."

(on quarterback Pat Cowan): "He played well. He did exactly what we wanted him to do. He did a tremendous job there. He's in the driver's seat right now. He is almost in the predicament of being the last man standing. He's in that position right now. If you ask him the same question, he'll say that he's just glad we were able to win today. He knows he can play better just like all of us can coach better. We're just happy to have one of our top two quarterbacks healthy."

California Head Coach Jeff Tedford

"We need to get better as players and coaches. We just need to get better in all phases. They have a very good defense, no question about it. There is so much parity in this conference. Anything can happen on any given week. I think the conference is as good as it has ever been. They just played better than we did. We didn't get it done as a team today. They were more physical and deserved to win the football game."

"We'd like to have that last one back. [Alterraun Verner] made a great play. Nate (Longshore) thought he had an opening, so he threw it. It's an unfortunate play."

"We have stumbled two weeks in a row now. We just have to regroup. We are still going to take it one week at a time. We are not going to just pack it in. We have another opportunity to play a really good Arizona State team next week."

(On the multiple pass interference calls): "There were a lot of close calls, but it went both ways. I thought it was fair. I have no complaints about that."
