STANFORD, Calif. - The 12th-ranked Bruins were held to five hits and a first-inning run in their Pac-12 road opener on Thursday at Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium, as #15 Stanford recorded a 5-1 victory. Senior B.B. Bates, juniors Jessica Hall and Alyssa Tiumalu, sophomore Stephany LaRosa and freshman Brittany Moeai had UCLA's quintet of hits.

Hall (4-3) suffered the loss, allowing four runs, four hits and two walks in one-plus inning. Sophomore Ally Carda fanned four in five innings of relief, giving up a run, three hits and one walk.

The Bruins (24-7, 1-3 Pac-12) got off to a great start, as Bates and LaRosa recorded back-to-back doubles to open the game to put the visitors on top 1-0. Hall would add a one-out single, but the Bruins would strand a pair.

In the bottom half of the first, the Cardinal (23-8, 1-3 Pac-12) scored three times. With one out, Leah White walked, Kayla Bonstrom singled to right-center and Jenna Rich chopped a single into left to plate White and even things at one. After a single to right-center for Cassandra Roulund, Jessica Plaza roped a double to left, bringing in Bonstrom and Rich to put the Cardinal up 3-1.

In the second, Stanford added two more. With one out and Hanna Winter and White on base following walks, Bonstrom doubled to left-center to drive in both runners to make it 5-1.

In the top of the fourth, the Bruins tried to rally. With one out, Tiumalu doubled to left-center and moved to third on a ground out from Moeai. After a walk to freshman Allexis Bennett, who then stole second, Stanford pitcher Teagan Gerhart retired sophomore Gracie Goulder on a pop up to short to end the threat. The Bruins had only one base runner for the rest of the game, a leadoff double by Moeai in the seventh.

UCLA and Stanford play the second of this weekend's three-game series on Friday at 7 p.m. The contest will be aired live on Pac-12 Networks. In addition, Gametracker will be available at UCLABruins.com, as well as live updates at twitter.com/uclasoftball.
