LOS ANGELES - In an early start to March Madness, UCLA, USC and Loyola Marymount took part in a bracket-style tournament at Merle Norman Stadium on Sunday. Bruin #1 team of juniors Meg Norton and Kelly Reeves took second place, while the #2 squad of sophomore Zoë Nightingale and freshman Becca Strehlow placed fourth.
The morning got started with a victory for the #2 doubles team of Nightingale and Strehlow, as they defeated Loyola Marymount's #3 team of Amber Mirabello and Hannah Tedrow, 21-8, 18-21, 15-8.
The Bruin #1 duo of Norton and Reeves played at the same time to open up the tournament and took down LMU's #5 of Ashley Maxfeldt and Anne Marie Taylor, 21-13, 21-9.
The #3 pair of senior Bojana Todorovic and sophomore Megan Moenoa and the #5 tandem of freshmen Rachel Inouye and Maddy Klineman played in the second wave of action. Moenoa and Todorovic advanced with a 21-18, 21-19 win over LMU's #4 of Taylor Scioscia and Rachelle Suaava.
Inouye and Klineman would fall to USC's #2 squad of Katie Fuller and Cinnamon Sary, 21-15, 21-11. Rounding out the Bruin teams in the first round was the #4 group of sophomore Karsta Lowe and freshman Karly Drolson, which fell to USC #3 Eve Ettinger and Bria Russ, 21-19, 21-13.
With the Bruins carrying over three teams to the quarterfinals, Nightingale and Strehlow got things started in the next round and took down the USC #4 tandem of Brooke Fournier and Natasa Siljkovic, 21-16, 21-13.
Moenoa and Todorovic dropped their quarterfinal contest to USC's #1 team of Kirby Burnham and Stevi Robinson, 21-16, 21-13. However, Norton and Reeves guaranteed a pair of UCLA teams in the semifinals, as that duo defeated USC's Ettinger and Russ in the closest match of the day, 21-23, 22-20, 19-17.
Nightingale and Strehlow took part in the first semifinal, taking on Burnham and Robinson of USC, as the Bruin duo was knocked off, 21-12, 21-9.
In the second semifinal, Norton and Reeves took care of USC's Fuller and Sary in straight sets, 21-17, 21-16.
In the third-place match, Nightingale and Strehlow fell to Fuller and Sary, 21-17, 21-18.
In the championship match, it would be another close score, but Burnham and Robinson prevailed over the Bruins' Norton and Reeves, 21-16, 21-19.
Fresh off its first-ever dual victory on Saturday against LMU, UCLA sand volleyball will have another first on Thursday at 1 p.m. as they host its first-ever home contest at the Annenberg Community Beach House in Santa Monica against fellow first-year program Nebraska.
