Sept. 4, 2012

UCLA sophomores Samantha Mewis and Sarah Killion helped lead the U.S. Under-20 Women's National Team to a 2-0 victory over Nigeria in the semifinals of the 2012 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup on Tuesday, sending the Americans into Saturday's final against Germany.

Just minutes after entering the game as a sub, Mewis made an immediate impact, recording an assist on the United States' second goal, scored by Kealia Ohai in the 70th minute. Mewis worked the ball to Ohai, who shot to the left side of the net past Nigeria goalkeeper Ibubeleye White for the score. Killion started and played the full 90 minutes for the U.S.

"Sam Mewis has given us a big lift every time she's come in in this tournament," said U.S. head coach Steve Swanson. "She's an experienced player and has been here before. I thought she did exactly what we needed her to do. Obviously, it was a physical game and it was hot and players were a little tired so I think that was a substitution we needed, for someone to come in and give us a lift and I thought she did that in the midfield. She can hold the ball quite well and she won some air balls and some tackles for us, but she's been doing that all tournament."

The game-winning goal was scored by Morgan Brian in the 22nd minute.

The U.S. will face defending champion Germany in the title match on Saturday, Sept. 8, at Tokyo National Stadium. Live coverage begins at 3:20 a.m. PT on ESPNU and ESPN3. Fans can also follow the match on MatchTracker at ussoccer.com and on Twitter @ussoccer_ynt.

The U.S. has won the tournament twice, defeating Canada to win the 2002 crown when it was a U-19 event, and most recently defeating Korea DPR 2-1 in the 2008 U-20 Women's World Cup.
