Cheney Named Pac-10 Player of the Week

Oct. 23, 2007

WALNUT CREEK, Calif.-- UCLA sophomore forward Lauren Cheney has been named the Pac-10 Women's Soccer Player of the Week for Oct. 16-22, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

Cheney becomes the second player since the award's inception in 1996 to receive the accolade three times in one season. Oregon's Nicole Garbin was the first to accomplish the feat as she received the award on Oct. 10, Oct. 24, and Nov. 6, 2006.

Cheney, from Indianapolis, Ind., currently leads the nation in goals per game (1.154) while leading the Pac-10 in scoring with 38 points (16g, 6a) after another seven point weekend that helped guide the No. 1 Bruins to huge wins over No. 2 Stanford and No. 19 California. The sophomore scored UCLA's first goal on a penalty kick and assisted on the Bruins' second goal in their 2-0 victory over the No. 2 Cardinal on Friday evening. Cheney may have been even more impressive on Sunday afternoon, scoring both UCLA goals in another 2-0 victory. She has tallied either a goal or an assist in 11 of 14 matches this season.

UCLA (11-1-2) took over sole possession of first place in the Conference following the impressive weekend and remains the only unbeaten and untied team in Pac-10 competition. The Bruins will look to continue their unbeaten streak, which currently sits at 13 games, as they face cross-town rival USC on Fri., Oct. 26 at 7:30 p.m.

This is Cheney's third weekly honor of the year, as she received the award on Sept. 25 and Oct. 9 as well, and the 21st all-time award for the Bruins. The top-ranked Bruins have claimed four of the eight player of the week awards this year.
