No. 12 Women's Tennis Clips No. 17 Florida State, 4-2

May 13, 2007

LOS ANGELES - Playing in her first NCAA Tournament UCLA freshman Yasmin Schnack stepped up when it mattered most, winning the decisive singles match in a 4-2 second round victory over No. 17 Florida State on Sunday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. With the win, the 12th-seeded Bruins (18-7) advance to next week's round of 16 in Athens, Ga. where they will face fifth-seeded Northwestern on Friday at 9:00 a.m.

Sunday was the first-ever meeting between UCLA and Florida State (16-8) in women's tennis. The Bruins will be making their eighth-straight appearance in the NCAA Round of 16. Friday will mark the second meeting between UCLA and Northwestern this season, as the Wildcats posted a 5-2 victory over the Bruins in the first round of the USTA/ITA National Team Indoors back in February.

UCLA began the day by taking two of three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. Ashley Joelson and Alex McGoodwin got things started for the Bruins at court No. 2, taking an 8-3 decision against Lauren Macfarlane/Tapiwa Marobela. Florida State answered back with an 8-6 victory at court No. 1, however UCLA claimed the point moments later when Elizabeth Lumpkin and Stephanie Wetmore downed Miranda Foley/Jessica Wente, 8-3 at court No. 3.

McGoodwin gave the Bruins a 2-0 lead once singles play began, taking a routine 6-2, 6-2 win over Marobela at court No. 5. The Seminoles then got on the board when Carolin Walter battled back from a set down to defeat Joelson, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 at court No. 4. Rounding out action on the back courts, the Bruins took a 3-1 lead when Lumpkin downed Foley, 7-6(5), 6-1 at court No. 6.

It was at that point that things began to get interesting, as all three remaining matches were in a third set. FSU inched even closer when Slater, ranked No. 102, upset UCLA's 15th-ranked Riza Zalameda, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 at court No. 1. With Tracy Lin trailing in the third set of her match at court No. 2, Schnack rose to the occasion next door at court No. 3. She broke Ania Rynarzewska to go up 4-3 and then held to take a 5-3 lead. After winning the first three points on Rynarzewska's serve, Schnack converted her second match point, eventually taking the match 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
