April 4, 2013

Recognizing Dan Guerrero's impressive record of achievements on and off Bruin fields and courts during his tenure, Chancellor Gene Block has extended the UCLA athletic director's contract through 2019.

Since Guerrero's appointment to the post in 2002, UCLA has won 22 NCAA championships in 12 different sports, the most achieved by any Division 1A program in the country over that period, bringing UCLA's all-time record NCAA championship total to 108. Under his fiscal stewardship, UCLA recently completed a state-of-the-art renovation of the famed Pauley Pavilion and made arrangements for a $200 million retrofitting of the Rose Bowl.

Guerrero, a UCLA alumnus, has also worked tirelessly to support academic achievement and life-skills development among all Bruin athletes, as evidenced by more than 5,700 student-athletes earning spots on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll and the creation of programs like the Wooden Academy, a comprehensive leadership-development program for student-athletes.

"Under Dan Guerrero, UCLA has become a national example of how intercollegiate athletics serve and further the mission of higher education," Block said. "Dan has excelled in both commonly accepted barometers of success in a role like his: fiscal management and athletic victories. But the true story of his success also needs to include critical, if less noticed, factors like his efforts to advance women's opportunities in athletics and maintain high academic standards for student-athletes, and his rigorous work to keep UCLA programs in compliance with NCAA and other requirements. Dan also serves on countless national boards and committees and is nationally recognized as dean and senior member of athletic directors within the Pac-12. I look forward to working closely with him to build on those successes over the next six years."

Guerrero expressed gratitude for the vote of confidence.

"Serving my alma mater is the honor of a lifetime, and I am committed to continuing to support our student-athletes and staff by implementing the vision set out by Chancellor Block," he said. "My sincere appreciation to the chancellor. Together, we will continue to do great things."

In addition to a compensation increase, the contract -- which is retroactive to April 1 -- includes potential bonuses tied to performance. No tuition or state funds are utilized in the compensation package, which is funded exclusively through athletic department revenues and private fundraising.
