ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The No. 3 UCLA women's water polo team improved to 3-0 on the year, cruising to a 14-6 win over Colorado State (0-3) on the second day of the Michigan Invitational. Sophomore Emily Donohoe again led the Bruins in scoring, tallying three goals against the Rams.
In the win over the Rams, UCLA also received two goals each from junior utility Alexa Tielmann, sophomore attacker India Forster. Rounding out the scoring with one goal each was freshman attacker Rachel Fattal, freshman defender Maddy McLaren and junior attacker Kelly Ronimus.
The Bruins jumped out to a 4-0 lead with goals from Dorst (7:40), Donohoe (7:02, power play), Donohoe (6:36) and Fattal (6:02, penalty shot). Stephanie Weed scored the first goal for the Rams on a power play at 5:29 to make it 4-1. Shelby Schaefer scored on a 6-on-5 opportunity to make it 4-2 at the 4:35 mark. But Forster scored back-to-back goals for UCLA (2:31 - power play and :06) to give the Bruins a 6-2 lead at the end of the first period.
Colorado State dominated the second quarter, holding the Bruins scoreless and picking up two goals to trim the lead to 6-4 at halftime.
Donohoe completed her third straight hat trick at 6:41 of the third period to put the Bruins up 7-4. After a CSU goal, the Bruins led again by three when Ferraro scored her first of two goals with 2:10 left. McLaren ended the third quarter scoring, giving the Bruins a 9-5 lead on a power play goal at the 1:13 mark.
UCLA returned to dominance in the fourth quarter, winning the period 5-1 en route to the 14-6 victory.
Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Sami Hill, played the first half in the cage for the Bruins, making four saves. Freshman goalie Alex Musselman patrolled the cage for the Bruins in the second half, making three stops. Melissa Fisher was credited with seven saves for Colorado State.
UCLA returns to action against Indiana today at 11:45 a.m. (PT)/2:45 p.m. (ET).
