Los Angeles, Calif. - The 12th-ranked UCLA Baseball team won its fifth straight over its crosstown rivals on Sunday, defeating USC, 6-1, in front of a sellout crowd of 2,157 at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Sophomore Grant Watson picked up the win after throwing seven innings and allowing just one earned run.

Watson was terrific on the mound today, allowing just four base runners in seven innings of work, one of whom reached on an error and whom he later picked off. Overall, Watson went seven innings, allowing three hits and one run while striking out three. Sean Adler took the loss for the Trojans, giving up three earned runs without getting an out in the sixth inning.

For the seventh time in 14 games, UCLA scored in the first inning thanks to great base running from junior Brian Carroll. After Carroll singled and made it to second on a sacrifice bunt, he attempted to steal third. As he slid into the base, his slide knocked the ball away and allowed him to score, giving UCLA the early 1-0 lead.

Watson made that lead hold up in the early going, allowing just one base runner in the four first four frames. After Watson allowed a leadoff single in the top of the fifth, UCLA's defense helped him out, as Pat Gallagher turned a great 3-6-3 double play with Pat Valaika to erase the base runner. Watson got the next batter ground out to second as he continued to cruise.

In the top of the sixth, USC tied the game up though as Watson allowed a solo home run to Vahn Bozoian, leveling the game at 1-1. However, UCLA took the lead right back in the bottom half of the inning when Kramer hit a bases clearing double down the right field line off of Adler to give the Bruins a three-run lead.

UCLA added to their lead in the eighth, getting RBI doubles from Valaika and sophomore Shane Zeile to give the Bruins a comfortable 6-1 advantage going to the ninth. David Berg came on in the ninth inning and shut down the Trojans to secure the 6-1 victory over UCLA's archrivals.

Overall, UCLA got multi-hit days from Valaika (2-4, RBI, R), Gallagher (2-4) and freshman Trent Chatterton (2-2, R) to lead the offense. Kramer led the team with three RBIs while Carroll had a game-high two runs.

The Bruins (11-3) will travel just up the road on Tuesday to take on Cal State Northridge (6-10) at 3 p.m. at Matador Field.
