SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Sophomore Stephany LaRosa had three hits with four RBI and a mammoth home run, sophomore Gracie Goulder went 3-for-3 and sophomore Ally Carda and freshman Paige McDuffee teamed up on a complete-game shutout, as the 10th-ranked Bruins defeated San Diego 8-0 in five innings on Saturday at the USD Softball Complex.
Carda earned her second win of the day after beating Boise State earlier in the afternoon to move to 10-1 on the season. She struck out six and gave up only one hit and one walk in three innings. The sophomore struck out the side in the second and had two K's in the third. McDuffee tossed the last two frames, allowing four hits. Goulder and LaRosa combined for six of the Bruins' eight hits.
UCLA scored in its first at-bat as the visiting team. Goulder led off with a walk and LaRosa lifted her fifth homer of the season, a 230-foot blast to straightaway center, to make it 2-0. One out later, junior Jessica Hall hit a comebacker, but Cassidy Coleman threw low to first, as Hall took second when the ball went into shallow right. One out later, Carda tapped one to third, but Chloe Kaneko booted it into shallow left, as Hall scored to make it 3-0.
The Bruins broke it open in the fourth, scoring five times and sending 10 to the plate. Senior Devon Lindvall led off with a single to left-center, freshman Allexis Bennett reached on an error by Mickell Escobar at second and Goulder laid down a bunt single to third to load the bases. LaRosa then blooped a single to shallow right, scoring Lindvall and Bennett to make it 5-0, as Goulder took third. Bates followed with a tapper to second for an out, but Goulder scored the Bruins' sixth run. After back-to-back walks to Hall and freshman Brittany Moeai re-loaded the bases, Carda went the opposite way to right, singling in LaRosa and Hall to make it 8-0.
The Bruins finish up the weekend with two more games on Sunday at San Diego State, facing New Mexico at 11:30 a.m. and the host Aztecs at 2 p.m. Gametracker will be available at UCLABruins.com, as well as live updates at twitter.com/uclasoftball.
