LOS ANGELES - The second-seeded UCLA women's soccer team cruised to a 6-1 victory over UNLV on Friday evening in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at UCLA's Drake Stadium. With the win, the Bruins (18-3) advance to the second round and will meet Cal State Fullerton (12-7-2) on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The Titans defeated LMU, 3-0 in the other first-round match on Friday.

UCLA got on the board at the 7:15 mark of the first half when Lauren Cheney scored her team-leading 16th goal of the season off a throw-in from Stacy Lindstrom. The throw-in never hit the ground, as it found the head of Lauren Switzer, who flicked it on to Cheney, who headed it over UNLV goalkeeper Alicia Lugo.

The Bruins owned just a 1-0 advantage at the half, however exploded for five more goals following the intermission.

UCLA took a 2-0 lead in the 50th minute when sophomore Christina DiMartino was brought down in the box resulting in a penalty kick. Junior Danesha Adams stepped up and converted the penalty.

Senior defender Bristyn Davis tallied the Bruins' third goal of the match in the 57th minute, as she ran in from the back to collect a failed UNLV clearance. She ran in undefended, sending in a 25-yard shot from the right side. Davis has now scored a goal in three out of her last four matches.

The Bruins scored their fourth goal five minutes later, as Switzer registered her first collegiate goal in the 62nd minute on a shot from the top of the box.

The scoring was capped by Adams and Stephanie Kron, who both scored on shots off the frame of the goal. Adams hit a 35-yarder off the bottom half of the crossbar in the 64th minute, while Kron scored on a line drive off the right post in the 73rd minute. Caitlyn Mac Kechnie and McCall Zerboni were credited with the assists on Kron's goal.

Down 6-0, UNLV got on the board in the 74th minute when Tanya Roberts headed in a Katie Carney corner kick for her fourth goal of the season.

UCLA goalkeeper Valerie Henderson picked up the 53rd victory of her career Friday, setting a new school record. She had previously been tied atop the charts with former Bruin Lindsay Culp, who had 52 wins from 1996-99.

With the win, the Bruins improve to 13-0 at home this season, extending their home winning streak to 24 matches. UNLV ends its season with a 9-11-3 overall record.
