UCLA (5-2, 2-2) wrapped up a solid work week with a "young guys" scrimmage this morning on Spaulding Field. The Bruins will next play at 24th-ranked Arizona State on Saturday, Oct. 27. That contest will begin at Noon and be televised by FX.
UCLA owns the Pac-12 lead and ranks tied for fourth in the nation with 18 turnovers gained (11 interceptions and seven fumbles gained). The total of 11 interceptions ranks first in the conference and is tied for fourth nationally. The Bruins are ranked ninth in the nation in sacks with an average of 3.43 per game. Linebacker Anthony Barr tops the team with 7.5 sacks and is tied for 13th in the nation with a 1.07 per game average. Senior cornerback Sheldon Price is tied for fourth in the nation in interceptions with a 0.67 per game mark.
Senior running back Johnathan Franklin and offensive lineman Xavier Su'a-Filo were named to the ESPN Midseason All-Pac-12 team. Franklin ranks ninth in the nation in rushing (125.4 yards per game). Franklin, with 878 yards rushing to date, is seeking to join seven other Bruin backs who have had multiple 1,000-yards seasons in their careers -- DeShaun Foster, 2001/2000; Skip Hicks, 1997/1996; Karim Abdul-Jabbar, 1995/1994; Gaston Green, 1987/1986; Freeman McNeil, 1980/1979; Theotis Brown, 1978/77; Wendell Tyler, 1975/1974. Franklin churned out 1,127 yards on the ground in the 2010 season. He came up just short of the 1,000-yard mark last year with a total of 976 yards.
Three more home contests in the Rose Bowl remain for the Bruins, including the Nov. 3 battle against Arizona. USC comes to Pasadena on Nov. 17 and Stanford is in the Rose Bowl on Nov. 24. For ticket information call 310-UCLA-WIN or visit uclabruins.com/tickets.
