LOS ANGELES - The UCLA women's soccer team kicks off its 2012 season this week, traveling across the country for a pair of non-conference matchups against UConn and UMass. The Bruins' season opener is this Friday in Storrs, Conn., where UCLA and UConn will do battle at 7:00 p.m. (EST). It marks the third meeting between the two schools, with UCLA owning a 2-1 advantage in the all-time series. The last meeting was in Connecticut in 2008, a 3-0 Bruin victory. After this Friday's match, UCLA heads 50 miles north to Amherst, Mass. for a Sunday showdown with UMass at 1:00 p.m. (EST). It marks the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

FIFA U-20 WWC
UCLA, and several other schools across the country, will be impacted in the early part of the season by the Under-20 FIFA Women's World Cup in Japan, which runs from Aug. 19-Sept. 8. UCLA's Sam Mewis (USA), Sarah Killion (USA) and Rosie White (New Zealand) are all competing in Japan and will miss UCLA's first four matches at the very least.

Olympic Bruins
Current Bruins Chelsea Stewart and Rosie White were both at the London Olympics this summer competing for Canada and New Zealand, respectively. In addition, former players Sydney Leroux and Lauren Cheney were members of Team USA, which claimed gold at the Games. Stewart didn't leave London empty handed, however, as Canada earned a bronze medal following a 1-0 victory over France in the third-place match. In addition to the four players in London, UCLA also had former coach Jillian Ellis, who served as an assistant for the U.S. team.

NSCAA Rankings
UCLA checked in at No. 6 in the NSCAA Preseason Rankings released on Aug. 7. The Bruins move up one place from last season, as the team finished No. 7 in last year's poll following the NCAA Tournament.

Pac-12 Coaches' Poll
The Bruins were recently picked to finish second in the Pac-12 this year, as the conference released its preseason coaches' poll on Aug. 6. UCLA was chosen just behind defending conference champion Stanford, which also claimed the school's first NCAA title in 2011. The Bruins received two first-place votes in the poll.

PAC-12 Networks
Fans will get an unprecedented look at UCLA women's soccer this year, as nine matches are scheduled to be carried by the newly formed Pac-12 Networks. The team's first TV match is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 7 against LMU at 7:00 p.m. The Pac-12 Networks is also scheduled to air the team's match against Tennessee two days later.
