Champaign, Ill. - In a battle of top 10 opponents on Sunday, the eighth-ranked UCLA women's soccer team scored three second-half goals en route to a 3-0 victory over No. 6 Florida at the Illini Challenge Cup hosted by the University of Illinois. The win concludes a successful weekend for the Bruins (3-1-1), who also defeated No. 11 Illinois, 2-1 on Friday.
Despite outshooting the Gators, 12-3 in the first half, the Bruins were unable to find the back of the net for the first 45 minutes of action. That changed just five minutes into the second half, however, as sophomore Sydney Leroux knocked in her team-leading sixth goal of the season off a pass from senior Kristina Larsen to give UCLA a 1-0 lead in the 51st minute.
Larsen would get a goal of her own in the 75th minute, her second of the season, as she buried a shot to the lower-left post after receiving the ball off a deflection from a Gator defender. Freshman Ahsha Smith was credited with the assist on that goal.
Senior Kara Lang capped the scoring for UCLA in the 88th minute, scoring off of a free kick.
UCLA owned a commanding 22-4 advantage in the final shot count. Redshirt freshman Chante' Sandiford picked up her second shutout of the season, making three saves in 90 minutes of action.
After playing its first five matches of the year on the road, UCLA will play its 2009 home opener on Sunday, Sept. 13 against Gonzaga. That match begins at 1:00 p.m.
