Senior setter Nellie Spicer (Barrington, IL/Barrington HS) of the UCLA women's volleyball team was selected as the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for Sept. 2-7.
Spicer was named Most Valuable Player of the Nevada Tournament last week and helped the Bruins to a 3-0 record with a non-conference victory over UC Riverside and tournament wins against Nevada and Seattle University. On Wednesday, the Bruins swept UC Riverside, as Spicer had 34 assists, five digs and a pair of kills. The senior helped the Bruins to a season-best .337 hitting percentage against the Highlanders. Two nights later in the opener of the Nevada Tournament, the Bruins pulled off another sweep, this time against the host Wolf Pack. Spicer had five kills in 12 swings, adding 31 assists, four blocks and four digs. Spicer concluded the weekend with 20 assists, three kills and three blocks in just two sets against Seattle University. The senior took the third set off, as the Bruins again won in a sweep. Spicer leads the Bruins with 10.00 assists per set and is fourth with 0.89 blocks per set and 1.83 digs per set. She also is averaging 1.28 kills per set and is hitting .333.
This is Spicer's first UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and third of her career.
