Utah Survives Rally by Michigan State to Advance

LOS ANGELES - The University of Utah (28-3) survived a furious rally by Michigan State (19-12) to win 30-25, 27-30, 20-30, 30-28, 15-11 in a first-round match in the 2006 NCAA Women's Volleyball Tournament on Friday night in Pauley Pavilion.

Kathryn Lovell led the Utes with a team-high 20 kills. Four Utes had double-doubles on the evening as Airial Salvo had 15 kills and 14 digs; Emillie Toone had 12 kills and a match-high 12 blocks (one solo); Whitney Webb had 11 kills and 13 digs while setter Sydney Anderson had 52 assists and 13 digs.

Katie Johnson led Michigan State with a match-high 21 kills. Jessica Hohl had 20 kills and hit a match-high .500 (20K, 3E, 34TA). Ashley Schatzle (18 kills and 15 digs) and Allison Ianni (68 assists and 12 digs) had the only double-doubles for the Spartans. MSU libero Nicole Colaluca had a match-high 27 digs.

Utah hit .207 for the match compared to .203 for Michigan State and outblocked the Spartans 16.5 to 13.0. While MSU held a 78-68 lead in digs, the Utes led 9-6 in service aces.

The University of Utah will play the winner of the UCLA/UAB match in tomorrow's second-round NCAA Tournament match in Pauley Pavilion. The match will start at 7 p.m.
