Senior forward Lauren Cheney (Indianapolis, IN/Ben Davis HS) of the UCLA women's soccer team was selected as the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for Oct.26-Nov. 1.
Cheney scored both Bruin goals in a 2-1 victory over No. 18 USC on Friday evening at Drake Stadium. Cheney, who ranks second on the team with 11 goals, gave UCLA a 1-0 lead in the 44th minute, as she was able to re-direct in a ball sent into the box from defender Jenna Belcher. After the Women of Troy got the equalizer in the 73rd minute, Cheney knocked in the eventual game winner at the 77:04 mark on a shot to the near post off of a cross from freshman Chelsea Cline. With that game-winning goal, Cheney moved into a tie with two other Bruin players for first place all-time on the school's career game-winning goal list (26 total). It marked UCLA's third straight win over USC. It was also the Bruins' 11th win in the last 12 meetings between the two teams. Cheney has 28 points on the year (11 goals, 6 assists).
This is Cheney's first UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and third of her career.
