Box Score

LOS ANGELES - Juniors Ali Daley, Kaitlin Sather and Nellie Spicer all had double-doubles, while freshman Katie Mills added nine blocks, as the fifth-ranked Bruins knocked off #4 USC in four games on Friday at Pauley Pavilion. Game scores were 30-26, 25-30, 30-25, 30-22.

The Bruins improve to 14-2 overall and 4-1 in Pac-10 play, while the Trojans fall to 14-2 and 3-2 in league action.

Daley posted 16 kills and 16 digs, while Sather nearly tied her with 16 kills and 15 digs. Spicer posted 49 assists and 10 digs for her double-double. Senior Rachell Johnson was also in double figures with 10 kills. Junior Jade Machado added 18 digs. The Bruins hit .194 for the match and had 15.5 team blocks.

The Bruins scored the first three points of the match and never saw their game one lead dip below that total. Daley and Sather started off with back-to-back kills and Daley served an ace. USC was still within three at 15-12 when UCLA netted five in a row to go up by eight, its largest margin of game one. After a Trojan attack error and an ace by freshman Juliane Piggott for the first two points of the run, Daley had three successive kills to make it 20-12.

Still trailing 22-14, USC went on a 6-1 run to get back into it and slice the margin to three points at 23-20. But the Trojans could get no closer. A service error to end game one gave the Bruins a 30-26 victory in the opening set.

USC jumped out to a 2-0 lead in game two and extended its advantage to 9-4, causing UCLA to call a timeout. The Trojans got their lead up to as many as six at 11-5 before the Bruins went on their first run of the game. Five in a row and nine of the next 10 points by UCLA gave the Bruins a 14-12 edge. Daley had three kills during the run. The Bruins got their lead up to as many as three at 16-13, but a 4-0 run by the Trojans gave them the lead back at 17-16.

The Trojans would not relinquish the lead for the rest of game two. Up 23-22, USC netted three in a row to take a 26-22 advantage. After a UCLA timeout, the Bruins cut it to two on back-to-back kills by Mills and Sather, but the Trojans responded with three in a row to set up game point. The Bruins staved off one game point, but the Trojans went on for the 30-25 victory.

UCLA led for most of game three, with its biggest deficit being just one point. With the Bruins on top 8-7, three straight points gave them an 11-7 lead and forced USC into a timeout. The three points came courtesy of a kill by Spicer and a kill and an ace by Johnson. Although they never trailed for the rest of the game, the Bruins' lead never went above four until the last point of the game. Leading 27-25, UCLA scored the last three points to take the game 30-25. A kill by Daley and two straight attack errors gave UCLA the 2-1 lead in the match.

The Trojans scored the first point of game four, but the Bruins ran off a string of five in a row to take a 5-1 lead. Spicer served an ace and kills by Daley and Mills keyed the run. After USC sided out, the Bruins went on another 6-0 run and the rout was on. Mills had two kills, Daley and Sather added one each and a block by Mills and Sather were all part of the spurt. UCLA got its lead up to double figures for the first time at 16-6, part of a 4-0 run. The Bruins lead never dipped below seven, with the largest advantage being 13 at 22-9. On match point, Sather spiked home the winner to give UCLA the 30-22 win.

USC had four players with double figures in kills, led by Kimmee Roleder's 13 with 11 digs. Jessica Gysin added 11 kills and 15 digs and Asia Kaczor and Bethany Johansen added 10 apiece. The Trojans hit .187 for the match, including just .103 in the fourth.

The Bruins resume their three-match homestand next week when they host Oregon on Thursday and Oregon State on Friday. Match times are at 7 p.m. for both nights and free live audio and video will be available at UCLABruins.com.
