Oct. 16, 2009

Box Score

SEATTLE, Wash. - Freshman Mari Hole had a team-high 12 kills, sophomore Lainey Gera notched a career-best 28 digs and three Bruins had double-doubles, but 12th-ranked UCLA fell in four sets at #4 Washington on Friday at Bank of America Arena.

The Bruins fall to 13-6 overall and 3-3 in Pac-10 play, while the Huskies improve to 16-1 and 6-1 in league action.

Senior Kaitlin Sather had 11 kills and 13 digs, freshman Lauren Cook added 47 assists and 10 digs and freshman Bojana Todorovic posted 10 kills and 11 digs. Sophomore Katie Camp had nine kills, while sophomore Amanda Gil recorded eight kills and seven blocks. The Bruins hit .157 as a team.

The Bruins scored the first point of the match on a kill by Cook, but the Huskies came back with the next five and never relinquished the lead for the rest of the set. UCLA netted five of the next seven to cut the deficit to one at 7-6 on kills by Camp, Gil, junior Dicey McGraw and Sather and a combo block by Gil and Sather. But runs of 5-0 and 8-1 brought the home team's lead back up to eight at 15-7.

UCLA closed to within four on multiple occasions, but could get no closer, as Washington won the opener 25-19 following a kill by Jenna Hagglund. Gil notched two kills and four blocks in the first, while Camp had three kills. The Bruins were out-hit by the Huskies .278 to .135.

The Huskies had the lead throughout the first half of the second set, but the Bruins came back before ultimately falling 26-24. Washington held an 11-7 edge before a 5-1 UCLA run tied it up at 12. Hole had two kills, Gera posted an ace and the Huskies had two errors for the five points. Washington bounced back with six of the next seven to take an 18-13 advantage, but UCLA fought tough and eventually took its first lead late in the set.

Down 20-17, a Washington service error and a Todorovic ace made it 20-19. Three sideouts later, a kill by Hole and a Gil/Sather block tied things at 22. Sather then tallied a kill to give the Bruins their first lead at 23-22. The Huskies sided out on the next point, but a kill by Hole gave the Bruins set point at 24-23. However, Washington scored the final three, winning it on a Hagglund ace to take a 2-0 match lead. Hole had a set-best five kills for the Bruins, Todorovic posted four and Sather notched three. The Bruins were out-hit .244 to .130.

The Bruins surrendered the first point of the third set, but came back with the next two and never trailed again. Tied at 11, UCLA scored four straight on two Washington errors, a Sather kill and a Gil/Hole block to make it 15-11. The Huskies got to within one at 15-14, but a 6-2 UCLA spurt got the visitors' lead up to a set-best five at 21-16. Camp had two kills and a block during the run, while Todorovic posted two kills.

The Huskies made things interesting late in the set, coming back to tie things at 23. A Washington service error gave the Bruins their first set point, but the Huskies sided out to even it at 24. A Gil/Hole combo roof earned UCLA a second set point and Gil capitalized on it with a clinching kill to win it 26-24. Todorovic had five kills in the third, Camp had four and Gil added three kills with two blocks. The Bruins won the hitting battle .200 to .182.

The fourth set was a tale of two halves, as the Bruins led early, but the Huskies came back to win and claim the match. UCLA scored the first three points on back-to-back kills by Hole and a Washington attack error. The Bruins still led between one and three points and held a 9-6 edge before the Huskies scored the next four to go ahead 10-9. A Sather kill evened it at 10, but a 5-1 Washington run gave the home squad a 15-11 advantage and the lead for good.

The Bruins tried to get back in it and closed to within one at 17-16. Down 15-11, UCLA scored five of seven thanks to kills by Gil, Hole and Sather, a combo block by Camp and sophomore Sara Sage and a Washington attack error. But the Huskies rallied with eight of the last 10 points of the set to win it 25-18. Hole had five kills in the fourth, Sather posted four and Gil added three. The Bruins were out-hit .231 to .159.

Four Huskies had double-doubles, led by Hagglund's 48 assists and 11 digs. Kindra Carlson posted a team-high 18 kills and 14 digs, Jill Collymore added 12 kills and 14 digs and Airial Salvo recorded 12 kills and 13 digs. Washington hit .232 as a team.

The Bruins take on Washington State in Pullman on Saturday at 7 p.m. Gametracker will be available on UCLABruins.com.
