UCLA Holds Second Football Scrimmage

UCLA held its second full scale scrimmage of the Spring on Friday afternoon at Spaulding Field. The offense produced three touchdown passes and the defense had numerous big hits to highlight the scrimmage.

Redshirt sophomore quarterback Kevin Prince completed seven of 11 passes for 87 yards and one touchdown, a 37-yard strike to sophomore wide receiver Randall Carroll. True sophomore quarterback Richard Brehaut was very productive, completing 11 of 17 passes for 106 yards. He threw touchdown passes of 16 yards to redshirt freshman Ricky Marvray and 26 yards in the corner of the end zone to Junior Taylor Embree.

The defense once again made it hard to move the ball, especially on the ground. The running game was led by redshirt sophomore Johnathan Franklin, who ran for 37 yards on nine attempts.

The coaches looked at many different combinations on both offense and defense.

Many Bruin alums attended the scrimmage, including Maurice Jones-Drew, Brian Price, Justin Hickman, Kevin Craft, Brandon Chillar, Dennis Keyes, Alterraun Verner, Audie Attar, Kyle Morgan and Kyle Bosworth, to name a few.

"I'm pleased with the work," said head coach Rick Neuheisel. "I saw some good things. I thought Randall Carroll showed. Jerry Johnson, Ricky Marvray, all made plays. They need to make plays. That was important. Nelson (Rosario) had a little bit of an issue with a rash that they needed to check, make sure it wasn't anything real dangerous, so he went over to get blood work, that's why he didn't play. Taylor (Embree) we played a little bit, but the goal was to get those other guys a lot of reps so that we could develop that position a little bit.

`'We hope like heck we can get (Joe) Fauria a lot of work next week because he's been nicked up. I just was told (Kai) Maiava's injury was a (left) knee sprain, not thought to be too significant. We'll see if he can get back for the rest of spring. And, what else can I tell you ..."

In response to a question about whether he thought he lit a fire under the offense with yesterday's comments, Neuheisel said, "Well, I just call it like it is. We did not come out and play like an offense that needed desperately to improve yesterday. I thought it was better today. Still, lots of work to be done. "

"There's a lot of moving parts in this stuff (Revolver offense). If we're going to be in this stuff and we're going to say that this is who we are and try to get to that point, we've got to be a heck of a lot better at it than this. If we can't get that done in 15 practices, then we have to ask ourselves if it's prudent to stay in it and that's where we are.''
