No. 4 UCLA Defeats CSU Bakersfield, 14-7

LOS ANGELES - No. 4 UCLA women's water polo returned to MPSF play on Sunday at the Spieker Aquatics Center, defeating first-year conference opponent CSU Bakersfield, 14-7.

It was the Bruins' third straight victory as UCLA had four players each score two goals, snapping the Roadrunners' two-match winning streak. UCLA opened up a 3-0 lead in the first period, on scoring by freshman Rachel Fattal (4:45 penalty goal), junior Kodi Hill (1:20 goal).

The two teams tallied only one goal apiece in the second period, to make the score UCLA 4-CSUB 1 at the break. With 3:51 left in the second period, Bruin senior Gisselle Naranjo scored a goal to make it 4-0, but with 1:42 left to play in the period, CSU Bakersfield freshman Nicola Barrett scored a power play goal.

Both teams had an offensive explosion in the third period, with the Bruins scoring five goals and CSU Bakersfield netting three. UCLA's attack was led by senior Leslee Kaczmarek who scored twice (7:28 goal/6:28 exclusion goal), giving the Bruins a 6-1 lead. Additional goals for the Bruins were by junior Alexa Tielmann (2:16 goal) and sophomore Danielle Ferraro (1:41 advantage goal), giving the Bruins a 9-4 edge at the end of the period. CSU Bakersfield countered with three goals, led by Barrett, who scored twice (5:45 advantage goal/2:04 advantage goal).

UCLA again outscored CSU Bakersfield 5-3 in the fourth period. Three Bruins scored their second goals of the game - Hill a 7:06 goal, Naranjo an power play goal at 5:35 and Fattal another advantage goal at 3:32 remaining, giving the Bruins a 12-6 lead. UCLA's final two goals were scored by freshman Alys Williams (2:44 goal) and freshman Charlotte Pratt, scoring a goal with :38 remaining to give the Bruins their 14-7 advantage. CSU Bakersfield's Barrett scored her fourth goal with 4:09 left to play.

In goal, Bruin redshirt sophomore Alex Musselman relieved Hill in the cage in the fourth quarter. With its loss to UCLA, CSU Bakersfield drops to 8-17 overall and 0-3 in the MPSF.

The Bruins, now 19-3 overall and 2-1 in the MPSF, will return to action on Friday, March 29. UCLA will have two matches that day in Northern California. At 1p.m., UCLA will have an MPSF encounter at San Jose State and three hours later at 4 p.m., the Bruins will play at Santa Clara.
