The Tigers took an early 5-3 lead, but the Bruins battled back with three in a row and never trailed for the remainder of the set. The 3-0 run came on two LSU attack errors and a Spicer kill. The set was still tied at eight when a 5-0 Bruin spurt put the home team up 13-8. Freshman Katie Camp had a kill to start the run, and after an LSU attack error, the Bruins got a spike from Daley and back-to-back blocks by the duo of Daley and Gil. Daley posted six kills, while Gil had five in the second. LSU out-hit UCLA .316 to .229.

The Bruins led for most of the third set to take a 2-1 lead. UCLA took an early 7-4 advantage thanks to kills by Gil, Daley, freshman Sara Sage and Spicer, as well as a combo block by McGraw and Sage. UCLA benefited from three LSU attack errors, also receiving a kill from Clements and a combo block by Sage and Spicer. The Tigers evened the set at 16, but three in a row by the Bruins on two LSU errors and a kill by McGraw gave them a 19-16 edge. Clements had four kills in the third, while McGraw added three, as the Bruins out-hit the Tigers .286 to .128.

UCLA trailed just twice in the fourth set to win the match 3-1. After dropping the first point, the Bruins scored five straight to take a 5-1 lead. Spicer had two kills and an ace during the run, while Clements had two kills. The Bruins grew their lead up to five at 9-4, but a 7-3 LSU run got the visitors to within one at 12-11. After a kill by McGraw and a combo block by Clements and Sage brought the Bruins' advantage back up to three at 14-11, the Tigers came back with four straight to take a 15-14 edge.

The Bruins responded with two in a row on kills by Clements and Daley to take a 16-15 lead and never trailed for the rest of the set. UCLA still led it 22-20 when it posted the final three points of the match on a Spicer kill, a Gil ace and a McGraw kill on match point to win it 25-20. The Bruins out-hit the Tigers .268 to .184 in the fourth. Clements had five kills in the fourth, Spicer added four and Daley and McGraw had three each.
