Dec. 22, 2008
Junior guard/forward Michael Roll (Aliso Viejo, CA/Aliso Niguel HS) of the UCLA men's basketball team was selected as the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for Dec. 15-21.
Roll averaged 14.0 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game in UCLA's two victories last week. The Bruins defeated Loyola Marymount, 75-44, and Mercer, 76-59, at home. Roll had a great shooting week, sinking 71.4 percent (10-for-14) of his shots from the field and was even better from three-point range, draining 80.0 percent (8-for-10) from beyond the arc. Roll came into the week averaging just 4.9 points per game. He came off the bench against LMU to lead UCLA to a lopsided victory with 12 points in 15 minutes. He then got his first start in nearly two years (seventh of his career) for the injured Josh Shipp and responded with 16 points in 33 minutes while going 6-for-7 from the field against Mercer (4-for-5 from three-point range). Roll was 4-for-5 from three-point territory in both games and didn't commit a turnover in 48 minutes of play this week.
This is Roll's first UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and of his career.
